Question Grande Ronde in early November

A few buddies and myself are going to be fishing the GR in early November this year.

I was wondering if anyone out there would be willing to share some advise regarding effective patterns and setups for that time of year?

Thanks in advance,

Iwan.

PM Sent.....

“In our fathers’ generation, they witnessed the complete collapse of the California steelhead fishery. In our generation, it was the famed rivers of Puget Sound. What’s next? We’re currently standing on the edge of the cliff and time is running out. If we’re going to do anything to save wild steelhead, we have to do it now.”

The good news is lots of fish in the river. The bad news is it can be bitterly cold in early november.I like to fish big leaches, or intruders in black or purple on a type lll tip. Fish the long slow tail outs. Fish seem to stack up in the frog water. Good luck Rick

One other thing worth mentioning is that the Ronde blows out rather easily after a rainstorm....which is not uncommon in November...even in far eastern OR/WA. I would make sure to have a contingency plan and be prepared to drive and fish other rivers in the general locale such as the Clearwater, Snake, etc. (not bad Plan "B"s, eh?) The Ronde is probably the most fickle one over there when it comes to rain.

A friend of mine, Chris Pasley, has fished it for many years and he prefers October for dry fly fishing/surface fishing with the warmer water temps.

November can be averagely more sink-tip fishing.

A few years ago I fished it with Speywater Guide Service, Mike McCune, Scott O'Donnell and Ed Ward, on a 4 day 'camp & float' from just below Bogan's to the mouth.

Mike, Ed and Scott teach two handed fishing along with guiding you so you get a lot of 'bang for your bucks'.

All equipment and food is first class too.

Some of the nicest water I have fished.

I read and heard about the river for many years so it was pretty cool to get to fish it, especially with good friends.

November Grand Ronde

Only fished it once in November but got fish on a black/pink egg sucking leech, purple starlite leech and a purple GP fished on 15' Type 3 and 6 Rio tips. 12'6-13' in 6, 7 and maybe 8 wt. rods seem to cover the water very well.

Weather rules that time of year, when I went it had just turned cooler and subsurface seemed to be the game...if it is still warm, surface action might still happen.

My advice...watch the weather and choose accordingly. Hope you get into 'em!
