Salmon Fishing on the Grand Cacapedia

On a whim, I enetred the Quebec draw for a spot on the Grand Cascapedia in 2009. To my great surprise, I received a call this AM saying I had number 18 in the draw. I know nothing about this river other than it has a fabled past and can be a big fish river -- my guess is early in the season.

My dates for fishing the Miramichi in NB in 2009 appear to be July 20-24, so I decided to choose dates on the GC that would compliment those on the Miramichi. Consequently, even though I believe earlier is better on the GC, I picked 7/16, 7/17/ and 7/18 to fish there. How badly have I blundered? What can I expect at the time of the season I will be on the GC?

Although you haven't mentioned which sectors,IMHO you've done good by choosing these dates .
The GC SHOULD have advised you before today that you came in # 18(?)
Cheers

Thanks for the encouragement Brian.

The pools are as follows:

July 16: AM pool 82, PM pools 81 and 81A

July 17: AM pools 103, 104, 105, and PM pools 100, 101, and 102

July 18: AM pool 87, PM pool 88.

I asked the fellow who called to pick the pools.

BTW, when he called, he told me everything was pretty well open, so my guess is that either everyone was being called about this time, or no one is going to be fishing next season (LOL).

Dear Smolt,

So you picked some good pools on the WADING water of the Cascapedia. The 87 and 88 beats are in the LAKE branch, baiscally two beats, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. There is a lot of water inbetween these pools that you can fish as well, however, you need a canoe to get to it.

The 101-104 beat is in the SALMON branch and can be waded. Again, the beats are split up with a morning session and an afternoon session.

The dates you have chosen are as good as any others, based on what has happened over the last few years, however, should you try your luck again next year, you may want to drop me a PM so that I can coach you on what dates and sectors might pay off for you!

I am sure you will have a great time fishing there! I fish and guide quite a bit in both of those areas, especially in June, and love both branches!

You will have fun and see some nice water.

Good luck!

David
