Walk and Wade on the Salmon in Idaho...

Walk and Wade on the Salmon in Idaho. Anyone have the 411 on this river? When are the runs and what water fishes when? Camping? Lodging? Cleats? Staff?

Thanks in advance....

Are you talking the Salmon by Whitebird or way up by North Fork and Salmon?

Idaho Fish and Game posts weekly fishing survey results on their steelhead streams at the following link http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/fis...eekly_harv.cfm

It seems like the run will show up in the North Fork/Salmon area in October, and you can fish that area until the river freezes. Back when I lived on the dark side and pulled plugs I did very well around Thanksgiving, but I think the better fly fishing is in October before the water gets too cold. The only problem with that is I'd rather fish the Clearwater in October than the Salmon anyday. Once the river thaws in March you can start fishing again, and the areas around the Pahsimeroi River Hatchery, and up by Stanley are very popular. However, those fish have been in the river all winter and are pretty tired by then. I've always wondered about spey fishing the Flathead River in the Kalispell area for Lake Trout. Ever try that?

There is a ton of fly water from just up river from the town of Salmon to Shoup. Most people camp unless your lucky enough to get a room at North Fork or the Shoup store. It has been a great season up there so far, but I'm afraid the number of fishable days are numbered. Slush ice should be flowing soon, which makes it all but impossible to swing a fly. But as of now the water is clear. Last temps I took ranged from 39 to 44, and the water has been clear. We get them on all the typical stuff, but with as cold as the water is don't be afraid to throw huge flys on 3's and 6's.

I'm on the river daily and the best of the season is right now. Most of the flat lander gear chuckers have gone home. You can have first fly in most runs. Forecasts for the next week show above normal temps. Carpe Rodum!
If you're thinking of coming over we'll hook up.
