Gaula july 2009
Gaula is in the top rank of Norwegian rivers. Yet it is tricky and has many and knowledgeable anglers who fish hard, long days. The Gaula's main feature is its wonderful, big pools, and the chance of big, wild salmon. Yet, you cannot expect to catch many during a weeks fishing. Even on good beats the catch is on average not much more than 1 - 4 salmon per rod per week, evaluating the season overall. But you have a good chance to get a 20 plus pounder.
The GAulfoss is a factor, yet the last seasons the best weeks above the waterfall has been weeks 24 and 25 - the second and third week, before midsummer...
The river is popular and many good beats are held by Scandinavian anglers, and for a much lower price than the foreign providers charge! Get there, make contacts, start fish good beats in poorer weeks when space, and spend time to move into better weeks. After a good 2008 the pressure is increasing, also as other Norwegian rivers loose strenght.
PS August 2008 was pretty good, despite low water, which often characterises Gaula after week 30.
