'08 Qc. season

Well , the 2008 season has wound down here in Quebec and what a season it was !
Runs were way up. The Malbaie spectacularly so ,1200 + in mid September and STILL COUNTING .Looks like the fish ladder will be manned well into Oct. :-)) .My favourite "secret" river the Escoumins had a run of 539 . Not much by World standards but a nice increase from past yrs. due mostly to an entire community getting together and helping the river out . Other marginal rivers in the province had similar to better news ! On a few rivers although the count was way up the ave. size was down somewhat.
Didymo was evident in a few Gaspe rivers ,however when you did spot it it was in very small areas .
My season was interesting,in that when everyone else was into fish I was batting nil or loosing the very few fish that I did hook into . However what goes around comes around and my September fishing was incredible !
The increase in runs was very evident all around the east coast it seems down through New England . Top Gun seems to be the Humber in Newfoundland with an incredible run of 55000 +
Cheers

Brian

hallo from germany,

i fished the first week of september in gaspe (petite c, grand c, bonnie)
i started fishing at the grand c. sektor c. after two days fishing nothing.

for the next days than i had grand c. branches. but after my first days experience i switch plans and fished the bonaventure public water. and there i had one of my best fishing ever. together with one day sector e and one day at the home pool of the petite i hooked 20 salmon and caught 7 of them.
i lost in petite black a fish over 35 pounds and other nice fish in the different pools. also i had a lot action with dryfly

i hope catch and release is next year as well.

my special thanks goes to my guide david bishop. he brought me to the fish- david, you are the best.

for next year i hope also i can land more fish.

Hey Chris...

Chris,

It was great fishing with you as well! I am glad you finally got into so many fish, to bad we did not land more but that is salmon fishing! We will have to fish together the entire time next year.

By my count we hooked 29 fish in the days we fished together but then again, who is counting! Truly some spectacular action! And on dry's in September! I love the picture you sent of that big hen fish underwater.

Stay in touch and get your draw cards in soon! Same goes for the rest of you, deadline is oct 31!

Best,

David

O8 Season in our area

Salar 1,

Glad to hear that things on the lower N. Shore and North shore went so well. Wish I could say the same for us. Sure, it WAS indeed a better year than 07 but not THAT good. The Bonnie saw an increase in fish but then again, that is because nobody was whacking them this year! There is still a lot of room for improvement and I am very confident with the new and concious measures the Bonaventure ZEC has taken to save the river that things will come back strong very quickly.

As for the Cascapedia River, things were not so ducky. The fish count was a bit dissapointing but the fishing was relatively good during most of the season on C sector at least. The early season was good overall but tapered off by late July.

The Petite Cascapedia saw a normal run of fish this year but a huge increase in sea run brook trout, which is awesome! I had some incredible days fishing for myself and guiding this past season and I know that I will have a lot of new clients chomping at the bit to come with me next year. The salmon run, like I mentioned, was average but the fishing was good overall. At least for those who poked around outside of the three major pools, which is to say, not too many people!

With Catch and Release angling being practiced just about everywhere now here in the Gaspe, we should start to see some improvement over the next few years. Would be nice if we could save all the early run fish coming into the river but that is for the politicians to deal with.

Best to you all,

David

Dave
The Ste Anne has shown the forsight and intelligence to institute C&R for the beginning of the season and will wait for the count in July on whether to allow catch and bonk (IMHO and just my opinion is that they'll stay C&R for the entire '09 season). Sea Trout on the Matapedia ,also ,was fantastic !
Cheers
