Ponoi

Just back home from my week on the Ponoi. If you followed along on the Lax-a website you already know that it was indeed a challenging week. The cold Arctic rains arrived bringing the river up over a meter and a half and dropped the water temperature something like 10 or 11 degrees celcius in a day and a half. But Ponoi is Ponoi and we still managed to catch fish. In camp with me were a couple of experienced steelheaders who agreed that our week was like really good steelhead fishing. We worked hard and kept the faith and managed to find fish most days, with a couple of glorious moments thrown in where Ponoi showed us her legendary qualities. Here's one fish I landed near Pacha Camp that is a great memory for me, caught on a long speycast in faster water. I have no eye for estimating salmon weight but my guide and my fishing partner both agreed this was a 7 - 8 kilo fish, or somewhere in the range of 15lb - 17.5lb. I'll post a more detailed report in a few days when I recover from jetlag!
