day on the Bulkley

Hello all,

I'm relatively new to the board and would greatly appreciate a bit of advice.

I'm going up to spend a week on the Babine in Oct, but through an airline snafu (or so I told my wife) I'm arriving in Smithers a day early. I plan to hit the water on that extra day, and I figured the Bulkley would be my best bet.

This is my first trip to BC, so I know nothing. I'm a beginning spey caster and otherwise experienced steelheader. Do you guys think I'm indeed best off on the Bulkley?

Also, I've called a number of guides, but everyone is booked for week long trips around that time. My plan was to rent a car and drive around. Will I find good water to wade-fish? Any map recommendations? I have the Backroads guide book.

Thanks very much in advance.

Hiya

You can pick up a map at Calderwood realty in town that will give you access points and areas to drive too. Frankly though if you don't have a lot of time, park near the bridge and fish upstream or downstream of it on either side. The water there is generally productive.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you're referring to the Yellowhead Hwy bridge southeast of town, right?

TroutMD:

Ditto what Johanthan said and since you will have a car you can also drive to access points in Telkwa, Quick, and Walcott.

I hope to be there in the fall also depending on the mad money fund by then.

Have fun, you will be in prime dry fly water at the right time.

God Bless,
Todd

Correct on the directions. The fairgrounds, upriver on river left is probably the easiest to access (also popular because its so).

Todd is right about the water. I caught my first Bulkley fish about 25 feet below the bridge on a brown bomber about ten minutes after arriving. A fluke I am sure but there have always been fish there.

When are you going to be there?

I'll be arriving Oct 2, fishing Oct 3, before heading up to the Babine the next day.

Thanks again for the tips. I guess I'll hit the bridge as you advised and then drive around. I've never been to the area before, so I'd like to scout around a bit anyway.

Too bad about the dates. I arrive on the 5th and thought we might be able to meet up.

Enjoy the trip ( I know you will).
