Help pimp my CA to MT trip

I'm leaving for my trip to Montana in a few days and I will be driving from the SF Bay Area to roughly the area of Helena MT. We will be fishing the Madison and the Missouri. Especially on the way back I will have plenty of time to stop on the way at various points for a day or so to fish. There are a few routes I could take. There is the more eastern route that would go though NV then Idaho via either twin falls or Boise. The other route which seems especially attractive is up through Oregon via bend, then WA through approximately Kennewick and Spokane. Does anyone have suggestions of good places to stop for a day to fish? I would be particularly interested in walk and wade opportunities. I will be on the lower deschutes in August and I would guess that would not be my choice for walk and wade, but possibly trout further up river somewhere? Other than the names of a few rivers I know next to nothing about Washington this time of year. Same with Idaho. I should have access to some experience and suggestions in MT when I get there so I would particularly be interested in hearing advice on the other areas. While this is probably too fine scale to make much difference, I will be heading out later this week, and will be returning back the week of July 11. Thanks for your help.

Try Hwy 12 through eastern Washington and northern Idaho...

I support the western route, up through northern California, as opposed to east into Nevada.

From the Kennewick, WA area, take 12 east through Walla Walla and into Lewiston (instead of going north on 395 and 90 up to Spokane). From Lewiston, you can drive up the Snake River and even up to the lower Grande Ronde. There's some killer bass fishing on both those rivers this time of year. You can take Hwy 12 all the way up the Clearwater, take a quick detour up the Selway to fish and to see Selway falls, drive up the Lochsa and hit some hot springs before continuing over Lolo Pass and into Missoula.

Don't drive through or near NV unless you want to be bored to death. The western route is much more scenic.

Sounds like a great trip. I'd look at the Williamson and Wood in Southern Oregon on your way to Bend and near Bend the Upper Deschutes is cool for big browns on the stripped streamer. The Metolius is a little out of your way (not by much) but is really great for car camping and you can fish for picky trout or swing and strip for big Dollies (which is my preference). Safe travels.

Are you going fishing or on a scenic drive. I would take NV and ID and I would go the extra and hit the Snake, both forks on your way to MT. I just got back form the Madison, love that river.

Every other year or so (for the past 40 or so) I make the pilgrimage to Montana from NorCal and on most recent trips have broken up the drive by stopping to fish the Owyhee or Donner/Blitzen on the way out and back also stopping in the Ketchum area to fish the Wood, Lost Rivers or Silver Creek before driving on to the South Fork Snake, Henry's Fork or West Yellowstone. I hope this helps? I will be going again this season in August. Happy to make some additional recommendations (fishing and camping) if you are interested, just let me know.

Staffzilla vs The Trout Master

Yes it sounds like a new fantasy movie coming out for the summer. Spoiler alert - staffzilla wins. Tuesday night in pitch dark after my last Shad fishing this season I dropped my homemade staff on the tip section of my Meiser trout master which had slipped in the dark from where I told it to stay. So on my way out it is the western route for sure as I pick up a new tip in Medford.

Thanks very much for all your awesome suggestions!!
