Learning about Montana Fly Fishing

I'm heading for a trip to Montana in July, and we will be fishing for about 4 days near Craig. Then I plan to hang out for up to week to fish on my own before/while driving slowly back to CA. Would love to hear about people's opinions on the best books for me to read, ect. I've been before, but for backpacking, not to fish. This is going to be fun - sock it to me!

No, unfortunately no boat - just when with the guides.

Fly Fisher's Bible - Montana by Greg Thomas

($25; Frank Amato Publications). This is a good representative of the vast amount of where-to-go-fishing information in print for Montana, perhaps the most famous fly fishing state in America.

Lightbulb Stream flows for Montana

As you get closer to your trip give this web site a scan: USGS Current Conditions for Montana_ Streamflow

The flows listed are updatd (roughly) 30 to 60 minutes so you're looking at 'real time.'

You can easily rent a boat from wolf creek angler or others. It's about $150/day plus shuttle. I think shuttle runs around $30. Totally worth it.
