Whitehorse, Yukon

Hi all. My girlfriend and I have decided to take a trip to Whitehorse and surrounding area for 2 weeks in August this summer. This won't specifically be a fishing vacation but I'm hoping to spend a couple days on the water with a fly rod. I've never been that far north before and my research has just begun but I'm only reading about Northern Pike, Whitefish, Lakers and Grayling. The Grayling are definitely on my list but I'm wondering about other opportunities where a 2 hander might come into play. Do any of you have any experience in that area? Any advise or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Pete

You might want to start here: How to Catch Yukon Fish and Explore | Yukon: Larger Than Life - Yukon, Canada Vacations, Travel; Tourism in the Yukon Territory , if you haven't seen these sites. They are government, but there is a fair bit of common-sense advice and information.

There's obviously a lot of fishing but not as much that is conducive to two-handing.

In August: if you are in Whitehorse, walk down to the river and throw "something" for grayling, and big streamers for pike and lake trout. It's not impossible to hook into an inconnu, but I haven't seen it happen myself.

Yukoners have a warped sense of distance, so the "surrounding area" is pretty big. How are you traveling? What's your driving radius? What else are you doing?

Feel free to send me a PM- and when you hit town, the first round of locally roasted coffee (or something) is on me.

I live in Whitehorse and regularly use a 3/4 wt two-hander (270 grain scandi) to fish for grayling, primarily on the Yukon River near town and the Takhini River. Its a ton of fun. If throwing some bigger flies, a 5/6 or 6/7 wt (360-390 grain scandi) two-hander is also alot of fun.

Feel free to ask any questions on fishing and what else to do here; but, my response may be slow - still in skiing mode...

Thanks Tom!
Our trip research and planning has just begun and I'm still not sure of many details but I'll be in touch with you and Borealis to beg/borrow/steal some of your local knowledge.
As always, awesome forum for information sharing! As I gain experience, I hope to have more to share in return.
