Oregon in March

Hi Speypagers,

My wife and I are planning to do a road trip down to Oregon from Vancouver, BC in March with the kids during their spring break and I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions for areas that would offer things to do with a young family while still have some decent steelheading close by? I was thinking ideally I'd try to sneak out for the early part of the mornings and then get back to do family things for the rest of the day? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, we've never been down that way before so everything will be completely new for us. Thanks!

added: We're thinking Portland and surrounding area as final destination, would be open to suggestions for stops in Washington as well.

The Clackamas, and Sandy rivers are very close to Portland. I like to fish the Sandy around Oxbow park which is 20 min from the airport. Easy access and close to town. The kids would like OMSI and the Portland Zoo is pretty neat as well.

Have fun.

Thanks Phil! Is public access an issue at all on either of those rivers? Any suggestions for local guides?

"Yes u can fish here but only on the weekdays and not the weekends as those are days for the guides and locals". Fortunately this is not the case and we welcome you and your family to come enjoy and exercise our fish. 🙂

I think the Cowlitz may get a winter run and has some real nice fly water.

There should be alot of fish in Cowlitz at that time. Look up Mike Sturza at Lost creek fly shop if you decide to fish there, he's always got it dialed in.

coastal rivers, I'd call Gil at Watertime Outfitters. Tillamook area. Mixture of swinging runs and indicator fishing between runs.
