Ganaraska River, ON

Hi,
Are any of the many southern Ontarians that frequent this site willing to share some info to get me started fishing the Ganaraska? Access points, flies, whatever you've got.

I live in Toronto and have spent most of my limited time going west, but my mother-in-law recently moved to the Port Hope/Bowmanville area. Ive two little kids (2 years and 4 months old respectively), so I'm thinking that my best chance for getting any fishing in this season is to take the kids to "visit grandma" for the day and then duck out to go the river.

Any help getting started would be great! PM me if you'd prefer.

Thanks
David

PS - I don't expect anyone to give up any hard-earned secrets, just hoping for someone to point me in the right direction to shorten the inevitable learning curve a bit.

I have never been but I hope you don't mind crowds, low holers, and roe slingers!

That's pretty much a normal day on the Ganny. There's a park a few kms up from the mouth that's ok for single hand work, and maybe a switch... Not much room to be swinging a two hander around but I'm sure no one would come near you! Lol

Anyone can catch fish with bait!

Ideal spot for some Tenkara (not room for much else!)

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles (spey rods). Doug Larson

Take only photographs, retain only memories, leave only a good impression of yourself, perhaps just footprints.

Your lines, your rivers, your way!

The Ganny is typical 1 hander water, i would not bother with a long rod. A few pools where you can get an ok swing going, it is more a culvert in places. When i first moved to Canada 11 years ago i could be the only angler fishing during a run, now word gets out extremely quickly and yes it is a zoo, i have heard of dudes chasing chinook with axes, i have seen spears hidden in the brush, i have seen net rings from poachers, i wont mention the trebles and snagging. Generally spring steelhead anglers are better than the fall low water huge fish crowd in terms of etiquette and litter. There are some things about that ditch that not many people know tho. Member of grwsa here, i help clean up tho this year after steelhead season the river was spotless! Impressed. Go when the water is up or raining, loogans don't like getting wet.

Typically i prefer going to the credit as i can use a 2 hander, it's a good option.

Guess i will ruin the surprise, but had the entire river to myself for a while now. I was watching these things loafing about pretending to be trout supping stuff at the surface on Wednesday. As soon as angler pressure arrives the fish get lock jaw. And they are just stoopid kings.

Also there is private property and i think still a pay to play spot too. Feel free to PM
