Deschutes Aug 22: Mouth or Maupin

Aug 22-24th I will be on the D. I have floated, camped and fished buck hollow to macks a few different trips in Sept. and Oct. Love the water at Beavertail, especially since you can find shade on the water almost any time of day. However, given the low numbers over The Dalles Dam at this point, I am considering going to Heritage Landing instead to hike/bike in. I haven't fished it before. So the question is this: fish water I know and like for most likely, fewer fish, or fish new water at the mouth, with maybe more competition, but probably more fish? Any thoughts from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there are more fish from Mack's to the mouth than further upstream in August. But a bit of heat could bring more glacial flour down the White, limiting your opportunities. Don't get me wrong - folks catch fish when the river's practically brown but wading would be even more horrifying than usual. My recommendation is to play it by ear. Bring your bike and fish the lower river if the White is tame and explore around Maupin if she's pukin.

Unless we get a lot of rain, don't bet on it.

Fish the lower river where the water is 'cooler.'

thanks for the quick replies

My wife informs me that I am taking our 3 yr old, 110lb black lab with me. This essentially eliminates the mouth. Will take my chances near Maupin, hope the White blows out just a little, so clarity it 2-4 ft to the human eye. Just about right for a steelie to see my fly, but not me.

Fred, not sure if your tongue is in cheek, but it appears water temp is 58 at Madras and 67 at Moody. Were you talking about where the "cool" kids hang out, because I am surely not one of them. It would be nice to check out some new water, but living in central Idaho makes me want to go where I have gotten grabs.

Hope you continue to find some steel at the end of your line during your time.

I would have recommended the maupin to Macks stretch, but it sounds like that's where you'll be. The the White has been turning the lower 50 miles into a brown mess for a few days now and who knows how long that will last. Fish are being caught around Maupin already, maybe not huge numbers, but fish are there. Cover lots of water and I'm sure you'll find a fish or two.
