Alaska Rainbow Trout fishing on the swing

Just got back from an epic 5 day fishing trip into the Alaskan wilderness with my fishing buddy Ross, guided by Ard Stetts (aka Hardyreels) and his trusted german Shepard companion "Boss". It was a trip of a lifetime, with amazing weather (20+hrs of sunshine per day), great company and even better fishing. They say that a picture is worth a thousand word, I'm not one for much words, so hope that these do our epic adventure justice.

Outwards bound.

Cessna 185 float plane controls.

Our pilot Casey Long from Alaska Airventures and my buddy Ross.

Away we go!

Touchdown!

Our river ride.

Ard (ever so serious piloting us through all the low water).

Our accommodations.

Boss (happy to be back on Terra Firma).

Coloured Kings in the river.

My first Alaskan Rainbow trout (a 20 incher).

Ard's mega sculpins.

Mighty mouse.

And the 28 incher it caught (Yes, fish was still in the water and I was alone so this was the best picture under the circumstances).

Drying out for a couple of hours before the next day's fishing.

Farewell!

CU next trip Boss!

True story. Our first night in Anchorage and we decided to visit Mossy's Fly shop. The fellas stayed open late for us (got lost thinking we could "walk" to the shop… haha). We mentioned our trip and that we were using Ard as our guide, and all they said was "he is good people". So true. I was thinking during the trip what qualities constitutes a good fishing guide. Fish finder. Patience. Humour. Technical know-how. Good storyteller. Great host. Ard checks every box in my books. Already planning another trip a few years down the road with my kids.

Well you were in good company right out of the gate! I miss Mike and the regulars at the shop as much as I do my rivers at times! And yeah that would be a bit of a hike from the airport! Haha Ard really does know his stuff and his own (very effective) way of doing things! And boss! What a great fishing dog!

Very cool! Great pics, and I get the feeling that they barely hint at just how much of an adventure you guys had. The timing of your post could not be better; I'm in pre-trip packing and planning mode myself, and this got me even more excited. My wife and I fly up on Monday, can hardly wait for another fine time in Alaska.

Awesome stuff, I spent some time touring AK and never found a way to make it work meeting up with Ard. It is a cool place seen lots of it but lots more to do. Loved your report and pics.
