Gaspe - any reports?

I'm on my way there now to fish the York, Dartmouth, St Jean. Have any of you guys fished there yet this season, and if so, how is it shaping up? Are there many fish in the river yet? Are they healthy?

Anxious to get there and wet a line.

Best Fishes,
Dave Cornue

The reports are that the Gaspe region was slow to get going but has fished very well this past week. It sounds like the water levels are good and the temps are bag on. Best of luck, let us know how you do.

Gaspe

Just got back from Gaspe and the water levels on the York and Dartmouth were very low. They need rain badly.
The rivers around New Richmond had fish and the fishing was decent.
All the best for your trip

Exactly !!! The York was shyte at beginning ,went to looking like a normal year for about a week or so and then due to LOW water levels went quickly to shyte again .They are no longer reporting daily catch stats online .I'd also say that the fishing in the New Richmond corridor was way more than decent, If one remained stealthy and didn't wade too deep .Took my biggest Bonaventure fish to date ( a fat 34 in. female) in a spot that later that day folk were wading right over !
pork likes this.

I can't comment on the York or Dartmouth as my friend is fishing on the Bonaventure but he noted the Bonaventure was in good shape and fishing very well, he said he had heard the same of the Grand Cascapedia.

Morning,

The news from the Gaspe is good. I spoke with Darlene in the Grand Cascapedia office, and she said that, while it started slow, the fish are now in in droves and the fishing is hot. As of Friday, they had almost 500 fish to the season (roughly) with a few in the 40 lbs class, and a few more in the 30's. My dad was staying at one of the camps for a night, en route back from the Restigouche, and he said two fisherman were back in camp by 9:30 am, having caught their quota for the day. Meanwhile, I've seen and heard solid reports from the Bonnie. Seems to be fishing beautifully. However, they're meant to get some heavy rain this week so I don't know how that will change things. Also don't know how the other rivers are fishing, but that's the intel I have.

Hope you have a good trip! I'll be up there later this summer. Already it looks better than last summer.

Best,
Ben

Water levels.

Good evening,

Have a great trip !!! Check the Salmon Quebec website - with links to water levels etc. The water levels on the other Gaspe rivers - north shore at least i.e Matane etc. - look to be above average.

Enjoy !!

I spent a week on the Bonaventure River (22 June to 28 June) and it was tough sledding. There were fish in the river, but they were slow takers. The water was about 48 to 52F and the air was about 60 to 65F. On some days we had plenty of wind.

I hope you do better on the upper Gaspe while fishing the York and Dartmouth Rivers.

Doug

I just read that the Cascapedia River society had 705 catches for the month of June, with all being released.

I knew I made a mistake planning my vacation this year.

Brian,

Did the Gaspe ZEC close the take on account of not meeting the 500 counted fish or was it just because?

Either way, its good news, of course. Those rivers dont really get enough fish for a take in my personal opinion.

I can't hazard a guess as to why
These decisions are not taken without due cause
They were supposed to have done the count a bit later this year .Perhaps due to the extremely low levels they moved that date up (?) nothing is coming out in the wash yet and I ain't asking . Maybe their twisted reasoning for remaining catch an cook last year has come back to bite them . Also the Ministry was keeping a very close eye on them this year .
