Sandy River OR in May

I'm going to be in Portland May 13, 14 and 15 this year (I know, the Clave is that weekend) and may be able to wet a line while I'm there. Depending on what the rest of the family have in store for me (the 15th is my birthday) I may bring my nephew to the clave--he lives in Portland and I've been trying to get him hooked on 2-handed casting for a few years now.

I actually would rather try to wet a line on my own, so if my nephew isn't up for the clave, I'm going to try to find some fly water. It seems that Oxbow would be a little crowded that weekend for someone wanting to just fish.
Can anyone suggest any decent fly water? I'm not asking for secret spots (this is the Internet after all), just point me towards some good places to look. Some fly suggestions would be great, too.

Thanks!

MC

a nice hike

up or down river from where the demo's take place, the further away from the crowd, the better.

I fish because the voices inside my head tell me to.

Upper Oxbow Park

The Spey Clave is held in a Group site, downstream of the boat ramp a few clicks. If you head up to the trailhead on the upstream side of the campground, it will take you upstream quite a ways and you should find some fine runs. Complete solitude? Probly not.

The Sandy & Clack both have spring chinook right now - more in the Clack - so be ready to hang on! Many springers grab flies, but few of them are landed

Water

The Sandy will likely be crowded but you might find some water and intercept a summer. We need water as the river is low, low, low.

If we have some rain, your water opens up. Oxbow is a good starting point. Boat ramp up or down.

Flies: small hobo Speys or other 2" flies, traditionals, small tubes. T-8 or even a sinking poly if using a scandi. Blue/ black, red/black, maybe something natural.

Good luck

Summer is an ideal season to enjoy this kind of places. I have been to Sandy River many years ago with my family to enjoy our summer vacations. This river is well known around the world because of its fishing and awesome natural beauty. According to my point of view every nature and adventure lover should go there once in his life.
