New Rio Short Head Speylines

Anybody tried the above lines in 10/11 wt yet ?

If so, do they handle 10 ft polyleaders well ?

Thinking of using one off a 14'8 10/11 wt rated rod which is quite fast and powerful (guideline Reaction FRS). Like the idea of the short 50ft head along with a 10ft poly for easy casting/ fishing.

Any comments welcome

Rio has a bewildering array of Scandi lines. I started with the AFS ( I have float, S1, S2-S3, and S4), but they see almost no use these days since I now prefer the Steelhead Scandi Spey floating. I can turn over 10' of T-8 and a reasonably large fly with no trouble with that (the AFS heads lacked a little turn-over oomph). But now it seems the SHSS has been discontinued, as has the AFS? The Scandi Versitip looks intriguing. The Scandi Body seems a lot like the Airflo Rage to me. I have one of those for my smaller rod--it's really nice, and versatile (10' tips plus leader, poly leaders, or just long mono).

Does the head weight and length on the versitip systems include the tips in those measurements?

Thanks!

The Steelhead Scandi and AFS heads are still there just under the term RIO Scandi. Below 35' I believe they are Steelhead Scandi heads and above they are AFS.

I believe the weights of the versitips include the weight of the tips.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

As to the short head lines, I haven't tried them as yet but a very informed source told me they work quite well with a 12' RIO knotless steelhead leader.

We threw some 10' VersiLeaders on the smaller sizes when testing them and were pretty darn impressed with how well they cast. Like Poppy said they're very nice with our 12-15' mono Salmon/Steelhead leader. Fished the 6/7 like this in BC and LOVED it.

Interesting line.
I found that the most comfortable head length for me is near 40' .

and it's also available in 5/6wt, so it's suitable for lightweight spey fishing for trout

This, surprisingly well too!

I've put some miles on this line, mainly the 6/7 on a 6126 Method and really like it. Easy and smooth. Great line for folks who want to transition from Scandi heads to something a tad more traditional. It just got a ringing endorsement from Whitney Gould the other day so its not just hacks like me!

winter short head athority

I had the line guru, Steve Godshall chop and loop a 430gr and 470gr version for me. Both cut at 10' according to my rod, and tips, per his reccomendation. Casting with 13' delta 77gr tips on both was off the charts. even better than with the floating tip. handled lightly weighted flies, no prob. the low stretch core is no gimmick, you can feel everything so much better, and trout at least, get stuck, if not landed, noticeably more. in tight spots, casts amazing with part of the head in the rod, too. this may be my new go to all-round trout line. going to try an intermediate tip for steelhead next week, maybe just right for mid-day.
cant figure why i don't like it quite as much with the floating tip. probably a casting issue. i have plenty of those

How different is Rio Short Head taper from WA or FF 45 ?

At first glance they seems very similar.

i have an old 438gr wa 45 head. very similar, but the wa seems better with the floating tip, couldnt tell the difference with the tips tho. the rio i was comparing it to was 424 gr per my scale, so not exactly apples to apples.
