Colored Backing

Anyone know if the newer colored backing from Rio and Scientific Anglers tends to 'bleed' when wet? I am looking at the red 30lb. Wondering if either will make a giant mess after being dunked.

I don’t know if either bleed but if your worried about it there’s always white. I have had mono running bleed before. All of my reels are old and don’t show backing at all. Hope someone can enlighten you more then myself.

I've used a lot of 30 pound orange Scientific Anglers backing (thanks to a gift 5000 yard spool), and had no problem at all with color bleeding.

I have used Yellow, Green, Blue, Pink and Orange over the decades. My recent spool of pink and green are fine, and splice orange as a marker.

Blue is also fine, but very difficult to sight in the water.

No issues at least with yellow, red or green.

Thanks for the comments.

The red colored PowerPro has a lot of reviews about making a mess, so hopefully the dacron backing is not as bad.

It is all about what dye is used and how it bonds to a given material.

I bought a reel with fresh black backing and don't know what brand it was but definitely bled and stained the fly line.

I think I remember hearing (not sure) that the old Cortland greenish yellow used to do that but they have addressed the problem.

Fish slime will probably help with that, like colorfast detergent!

I did have some some redish Dacron (extra dark orange?) that was labeled SA #30 that bled quite a bit. It was sound, but a bit messy. But the backing was suspiciously wound from a monster spool onto a separate smaller spool, and labeled by hand, not to mention purchased on eBay, and not from one of the big shops. Since I never had any issues with any other backing from SA I’m going to have to classify that data point as a possible aberration.

Still, it sounds like that could possibly be what you are looking at.

As I recall several years ago I had some dark orange dacron that bled onto a few saltwater reels. I have reels with blue and flo yellow (SA) and no issues. Only have green Power Pro on one special reel that needed more capacity - no bleed that I can see with it. Although the colored lines are "pretty", since the orange bleed, it's been the plain Jane white (SA) for me.

I've been using Rio in multiple colors and have had no issues with colors bleeding.
