Hi, I might be interested in trying the OPST Lazar Line but I don't know what size to choose and there is no chart head weight/Running size anywhere. Weird.
They are available in 25, 30, 35, 40, and 50 lb. tests. That's a lot of options. Very nice but somewhat confusing.
I would use it mainly with a 500 Skagit Max or a 510 Rage on the Sage TCX 7126.
BTW, I could also use a few independent reviews as well...
Ed Ward/OPST has a video primarily focused on knot tying with Lazer line. Towards the end of the video he discusses running line size vs head weight and gives fairly specific recommendations. It’s worth watching. I think 35 or 40 lb should do it for you.
40 will work fine. I fish 50 on my 8 weights for winter fish. The slightly larger diameter is easier to grip with cold wet fingers and I like knowing when I hang up way out there and have to pull to break off, it is my leader that will break.
The only other time I use the 50 is on long bellies in weights 9 and above.
IMO, nothing but 50. That includes all “spey” set ups, single and double handers alike. Since you are using mono, you are already gaining distance. Fifty pound offers a durability and tactile that is extremely nice to have, especially when it comes to long days, colds days, or a combination. As with everything take opinions with a grain of salt, but as someone who has literally used every size, in most applications, I’ve settled on 50 being the most dependable. If your casting is there, even a 150 gr. commando head with shoot farther than you can effectively fish, in my opinion.
Good luck with whatever route you choose, and tight lines!
I've used 30,40, and 50 on my 8 - 10 wt Spey Rods. All future purchases will be either 35 or 40 regardless of the size of the rod.
