I found a Peerless 1 1/2 fly reel on my local craigslist and I was wondering if I could use it on my 3wt trout spey rod. I don't know anything about these reels it just looks to be an OK deal and I'm curious.
I have a Peerless 1 1/2 that I use on my SH trout rods. It’s a great reel that is no longer made. I use it primarily with a 4 or 5 wt line.
I don’t have a 3 wt trout Spey so I can’t offer any first hand advice with regard to compatibility, but I think it would work better on a fairly short or fairly light rod because the Peerless is not a large reel. I think that you can still find specs for the Peerless reels online, but if not I could weigh and measure mine.
Online I found specs of a 3" reel with capacity of 30 yards plus DT5F (WF6F).
I think the general formula is minus 2 line ratings for a DH, so this should fit a 3/4 trout spey?
I use a 3 1/4" reel for a 11'6 #6 so I would say that it would work, especially if you use mono running line, short heads and if need be, gelspun backing!
