Scandi for Sage TCX 7126

Hey all,
I have this rod and have found it to be a cannon for skagit lines. I got a Rio scandi short 480gr which (I believe) matched the rod according to the Rio chart but I cannot cast it well at all. Maybe it's not a good grain-weight match for the rod? Or maybe I just suck at scandi casting? Can't rule out the latter. FWIW, the skagit is a skagit compact 510gr. I was swinging on the Rogue over the wkend, trying the scandi, after a few sad powerless loops, I switched to the skagit with a 5/5 mow tip and was instantly launching casts no problem. Anyone have suggestions or scandi lines they like with that rod? Thanks.

I've been using a Rio steelhead scandi or rio scandi short in 510 or 480 welded strait into a gripshooter with 10 ft poly leaders. I agree, that rod loves Skagit but will cast scandi and belly lines well too. Just need to adjust the setup and casting form to match.

Hello.. I tested RIO SSVT in #7, found it a tad light. Tested the #8, found it a tad heavy. Fortunately, they make it in #7/8. Naturally, it´s a question of weight distribution, but aim for 500 grain Scandi heads, at around 37 feet. And check your anchoring, coming from a Skagit head (loooots of anchoring) to a Scandi head (anchor your leader OOONLY, which includes polyleaders). It´s a giant leap between Scandi casting and Skagit casting. Yours borano20

A 540 Skagit head casts well on a TCX 7126. Do not underestimate the capability of that rod to load from the bottom end. I have fished a 510 grain Skagit head but find it a little light.

I enjoy tossing a Nextcast FF 45 7/8, 570 grain floating head on the 7126. The setup just flies. It is also versatile near structure (cliffs, trees, rip-rap rock).

A couple of notes on personal preferences. For longer casts, I like to load the rod into the lower portion. Much of my fishing is from shore and in close so I get to cast off the tip with short casts -- often. I rarely wade out to crotch depth or deeper.

I fished with that rod for over 5 years and the 480 scandi is the correct line. It can cast a 510 which will make it have some more feel, but the reward with a super fast rod like that is learning fast rods demand well timed stroke, not a lot of power. Your description of weak loops make it sound like you are putting more effort than is needed. Work on some switch casts using just your bottom hand to drive the line into the backcast and a gentle tug down on the forward spey. Too much top hand causes problems with that stick in my opinion.
