Hatch Reels

I'm sending in my Hatch Gen 1 reels to be fixed, and they will upgrade to Gen. 2. Does anyone know whether I can use the same spools after the update, or do I have to send in the spools as well?

Thanks

Same spools will work. The Gen 2 update is some internal drag work - new o-ring etc and it's worth it... You'll be set.

Part of the upgrade to Gen 2 is a new handle and ( I think) a new spool bearing so you will be using the same spool, but it will be upgraded along with the drag and frame bearing. For extra spools, if you don't care about the upgraded handle and bearing you can use the Get 1 spools as is.

I have 4 upgraded Gen 1 reels and I am totally satisfied by the work and customer service from Hatch. One of the reels is a black/black and they inadvertently painted some the lettering silver. To remedy the situation, Hatch provided a brand new spool without batting an eye.

I wonder if there will need to be a Gen 3? I don't understand why the affinity for the Hatch reels. I can think of so many other reels that didn't need to be sent back for complete drag replacement. I own and have owned many different reels. I never needed to send them back because of a faulty drag design hence a Gen 2. I own a Henschel and it is far beyond any reel I've owned or held in my hand. I just held a friends Bogdan.

Using Henschel for Sailfish, they’re great. But a Bogdan has more “style” 🙂

My friend refuses to use his Bogdan! LOL So what good is it? Oh, a stylish paper weight.

Actually the Henschel #4 is great on a spey rod.

Another reel is the Lamson Cobalt. Since this is Shark Week the drag on the # 10 & #12 could slow down a Great White. Maybe not, but it's the strongest drag I've ever used. Way more than you need. I use a #10 on my two hand surf rod.
