In praise of the Saracione Mark IV

Hi Tribe,
I am a comparatively new Spey Caster, so my opinion in some respects is not as valuable as that of many of my battle-hardened veterans. However, I am way beyond many of you in terms of mechanical knowledge, having spent over 50 years as a mechanic and craftsman in various fields. From that perspective, the Saracione Mark IV is worth buying just to take it apart on a winter afternoon and marvel at the care and creativity that Joe put into these reels. The drag design is, like all great designs, essentially simple but astoundingly effective. It appears that Hatch has pretty much ended the argument on reels that perform well and demand very little of us, but for those of you that actually WANT a reel that requires some care and periodic service, Joe's reel is amazing. Granted, there are a lot of parts in there, and a lot of things that could go wrong, but the overall result is a thing of beauty. I have not fished mine enough to comment on its durability, but I do not see any trouble spots. I do know that if you dunk it and do not open it up that the cork drag deteriorates. OK. I am still of the school that if you dunk a reel you ought to open it up, so that does not trouble me! Also, while Hatch's design is brilliant, I think that that the traditionalist builders like Joe have a point in that their reels have a frame and a spool, as opposed to Hatch's model in which the spool rather functions as both spool and frame. A downside of the Mark IV is that Joe no longer makes them, so service and parts are slow now. However, Joe still supports them, at least until he retires, which probably will be fairly soon. Anyhow, these old Mark IV's are still around, and well worth the time and trouble. Tight lines.

I have an older Saracione- Bellinger limited edition.
Used it to land a late winter buck on the North Umpqua yesterday.
Love the reel.
