Marquis Salmon Question

Hey all,

I have an 70ís Marquis Salmon1 and have found the check is fairly soft when fully engaged compared to other Marquis I have... My question is can I manipulate the tension spring between the pawls or maybe purchase/replace the tension spring from somewhere?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Google Bill Archuleta Reel Works. He can set you up with a new spring, probably
even a stronger spring.

recent thread, but there are more here

Its been covered in related threads here, but there are two main paths:

1) Bougle springs--thicker than Salmon springs--plug and play
2) Bend the upper arm away from the cage near the spring post, effectively opening the wishbone (old Hardy technician trick--see below).

Using the plug and play option... Does the Bougle size matter for a Salmon1 install? ie. Would a 4in Bougle spring be a fit or would I look for a similar spool diameters?

RazKal, if the "Bougle spring option" doesn't work out for you, you can contact The First Cast Fly Shop in Guelph, ON and they can help you out. They have a reel technician the makes repairs to all fly reels. They have repaired 2 of my old Hardy reels in the past and the quality and service was outstanding at a very reasonable price.

I’ve seeming bought some time now. With this mornings coffee, I took apart the reel and have bent the springs. There’s more tension applied through the range settings now. We’ll see how long this lasts... The First Cast will be my next option. Thanks again for all the insight gents!

I ordered spring years ago from Sonny at purefishing.com. I ordered A-packs which is springs and pawls for a St.Aiden and Marquis2 and #10. I actually put the Marquis 2 springs in my Marquis 10, such a stronger check now. I recently ordered a spring and pawl set for an Orvis CFO VI and the springs match up perfectly to the Marquis springs, makes sense though since Hardy made the reel for Orvis

I'm not sure. I ordered a first set from Archuletta, and then later a second set for another Salmon 1 from Hardy USA repair service when they were back on the East Coast of the U.S.(Connecticut?) I don't see a current listing for them there, but you might try an electronic inquiry here: Customer Service

Also there's this--in my tackle bag, I found a package that stated "#406 spring" .031" (stock was .025") My previous post in the other thread was incorrect as to thickness apparently. If that part number is still good, you may be on your way!

I removed one spring each from a Bougle 3 3/4, Salmon Bougle, Marquis Salmon No.1 & 2 , and 3 3/4 Perfect for comparison and the springs are identical - save for a slight variation in the shape of the lower arm in one of the five. Clearly standardized / interchangeable. At least between those reels. I wonder if a"Duplicated" stamp on some reels is actually referring to standardized spring fitting across several models???
