New Redington Grande Fly reel review

Just got the new Redington Grande fly reel. Wow what a reel for salmon, and saltwater fishing. This reel is all machined from bar stock alum. The drag is super strong at 40 pounds. The drag handle is nice and big for easy adjusting. The reel has a sealed drag. Easy to take off spool. Captive knob so you can't loose it. Huge knob handle to crank the fish in. I bought it from Avid Max for $313 shipped. No tax and no shipping. Its a 9/10/11 weight fly reel. Its a 4 1/2 inch fly reel. I own many high end fly reels and I have to say this reel is a bargain and well made. You can also get it in 7/8/9 or 12/13/14 size reel. The reel is a little heavy but balance out my 9 foot 10 weight nice. This would be a killer reel for spey and switch rods. Good looking reel.

The taxes and shipping were included in your price as the retail on the reel is $299. Nice reel for that. I've heard the Hatch 9+ be called heavy and yet this reel fits the same slot and is 11oz. That's more than I'd want for a 9 weight striper reel or a 10 weight permit reel. Just sayin... And why would anyone need 40# of drag on a fly reel? Don't get me wrong, I'm impressed if it can actually do that, but other than bragging rights I can't find a reason for it.

No I paid $313 for the 9/10/11 reel. Normal price was $349. First time buyers on Avid max get 10% off.

I own Hatch, Galvan, Orvis and other high end reels. This new Redington Grande gives these other reels a run for the money. Very well thought out reel design. No you don't need 40 pounds of drag but I bough the reel for all the other option design. What I also like this reel holds a ton of backing 250/300 yards 30 pound. Good for saltwater

I have the Behemoth 11/12 which I think has a similar drag system. 40lbs of drag may not be needed but the start up speed is what counts. I think the Redingtons might be a bit higher than the higher priced reels but incremental differences can't justify the cost difference. They have a lot of bang for the buck.

Behemouth is a cast reel. Grande is a fully machine reel out of bar stock alum. Much stronger.

Yes, for sure. I just remember reading about sharing some drag design.

Interesting. I've found a couple of shops that show that size for $299.00 and a couple that show it for $349.00. It's new, so it will probably get worked out soon as it's likely someone just screwed up entering information on the website. Having spent fifteen years doing exactly that, it amazing how many little errors can creep up. I didn't find any info on where they're made. Does the box and/or reel say Korea, Taiwan or China? That really is a helluva reel for the price if it's been done in South Korea.

This reel also comes in 14+. 5 inch reel. It holds 750 yards 50 pound backing. This will stop any Bluegill out there. LOL
