Todd Sands Reels

Has anyone ever seen or handled one of Todd Sand's reels?
I stumbled upon them on Gary's Vintage Fly Tackle site, and gleaned that he spent years with Paul Hermann on the premise of taking over production, up until his sudden death.
They look very attractive, with polished aluminium bands but only sized up to a light spey rod or trout spey. Apparently more sizes to be added in the future.

I got one of Todds reels when they first came out. The quality and fit looked good. Two trips to Gaspe' and it worked flawlessly.

Thanks Tom,

Just what I wanted to hear. Given Paul's mentorship I'm not surprised.
Once word gets around, I'm sure prices and waiting lists will increase and extend.
Distribution seems to be solely though Vintage Fly Tackle? Hopefully things will get back on an even keel there in the not too distant a future.

Cheers,
Steve

Steve-
Those are nice looking reels not sure why the reel maker would not sell directly especially with today's ease of selling via online or contact through the web. It seems all the bench made reel makers (Bogdan, Olson, Saracione, etc) sell or sold directly or at least ended up that way. It's just more money in their pocket, so would think he would do the same. Look forward to hearing any direct feedback from those who have used the reels.

John,

Years ago, new reelmakers like Todd didn't have sufficient presence to be able to sell their ware on the internet. It wasn't the sophisticated engine/model that we have today, and companies such as Just Reels, West Slope Fly, especially the former were able to bring to the attention of the fly fishing public, products that they would have never been able to see, were it left up to the makers themselves. It's a well known fact that Great makers make lousy Business folk, and without these intermediaries, some new makers would have never been able to make a foothold have they now have.
The love I have for bench reels now is a direct result of the websites mentioned above, and although their time has been slightly superseded and passed, they certainly had their time and place 20 years ago, and the makers themselves gained significantly from the exposure through these sites.
Would they have enjoyed the same success were they never showcased on these sites? I think not. I would have never caught the bug were it not for Jim Williams' Just Reels site. He gave up this business a couple of years ago, citing reasons that the business model no longer was viable, but it certainly brought prominence to many makers who would have never made the success that they now enjoy as a result of being on Jim's site.

Regards,
Steve

I recall years ago I became enamoured by the reels of one bench maker years ago, I found a dealer of his in Europe, with whom I placed many orders for his reels. He had a site similar to Jim's Just Reels site, promoting reel and rod makers.
He took good care of clients such as myself, and prices were always very reasonable, close to USD prices, which was unheard of for a European dealer. Service was always impeccable.
Many years later the said maker dismissed the services of this very successful dealer, citing reasons of allowing unreasonable requests from the clients, placing too much pressure on himself. The real reason was purely to gain more profit for himself, even though the dealer had put thousands of dollars his way, business he would never have drummed up himself. I immediately cancelled any outstanding orders I had with the maker, and put up for sale the reels that I had bought over the years. A trio of those reels are still shown on Gary's site.
A story of the goose and the golden eggs?
