Olson Reels - Who has one?

Looking at ordering an Olson reel, wondering who has one and your thoughts? Which model did you go with? Are they as smooth as everyone says? Did you get yours with a solid back plate or with the rotating back plate?

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Ive owned three, still have two, and one on the way. All have and will have rotating back plate. Have a 4 1/4 Round, a 4 Raised Pillar and had and sold to fund a Bogdan, a 3 3/4 Raised Pillar. Have a 3 1/2 Round on order.

No finer gear and pawl out there. The wait is sobering, up to or over three years now, but worth it.

They are LOUD though make sure you like em loud. My first, the 3 3/4, I bought second hand when the first owner thought it was too loud.

Olson Reels

I had the pleasure of meeting William Olson on the Salmon river not far from my home in Idaho. We arrived at a run at the same time where the river went into shade early in the afternoon. I offered to let him have the run as i had another one in mind that I like to fish in the early evening. He declined and proceeded to fish below where I was. I will never forget the sound of his reel as he played out line, and he was 100 yards below me. Neither one of us hooked up but we chatted later on and compared flies and rods. He commented that an Olson would be a great match for my 8142 Burkheimer. This was nearly 10 years ago and I asked him to make me one on the spot. After a few months i received a 4 inch rotating plate model #007. This is and has been my go to reel ever since. I use it on my 8142 in the fall and my 7134 Burkheimer in the winter and it has performed flawlessly for 10 years. i would highly recommend one of his reels to anyone that fishes for big game fish, and yes on the rotating backplate.

Contact Poppy at the Red Shed. He will be glad to share his enthusiasm for the Olson reels.

That was not a bad cast. I was just casting to the nearby fish.

They are a very fine reel, probably one of the best of the contemporary Vom-Hofe styled reels.

I have an all black 4" Round G&P with rotating backplate, and ordered an 4" RP disc. At that time the G&P was delivered in about a year but the RP took a while longer, probably double the time. By the time it was ready I wasn't in a position to take it due to other acquisitions and circumstances so the dealer sold it on.
I had huge sellers' remorse after seeing photos of the reel from a very happy new owner a year after letting it go, so placed an order again for another RP. It *should* be ready at the end of this year, making it fours years since I ordered it!
Is it worth the wait? You bet, there's nothing like a bench reel from a fine maker like William, though you need the patience of a saint!

I cannot say enough about how pleased I am with my Olson reels. I have four of them and each of them are cherished.
In my mind, I have started an heirloom collection of fine reels that can be passed down to generations. My daughter Celeste is already drooling over them ... in due time young lady

- 3 3/4" round style, XXX-Wide Drum. Silver frame, reel foot, spool, with black side plates and white handle. Rotating rear plate.

- 4" round style, XX-Wide Drum all black. Silver reel foot and black handle. Rotating rear plate. I was fortunate enough to acquire this reel through an ad I placed here in the Classifieds. This reel has the serial number #010 and is the only reel that I did not order, though I have discussed this reel in great detail with William.

- 4" round style, XXXX-Wide Drum. Silver frame, reel foot, spool, black side plates and black handle. Rotating rear plate.

- 4 1/4" Raised Pillar, XXX-Wide Drum. Silver frame, reel foot and spool, with black side plates and white handle.

I use my tackle as often as I can with no hesitation, however I am careful and mindful of it. These Olson reels are indeed built solid and are tough tools of the trade. The detail William puts into these reels is world class. My reels are loud and uniquely different from each other. That is because each reel has different specifications which change the tone of each of the "growls". As far as operating smoothness, lets say they are very precise.
The "Olson Experience" starts from first contact. William has a series of inquiries that enable him to build the perfect reel for you to ensure satisfaction.

Yes, the wait time is long and can be un-nerving and there is a reason for it.
I appreciate the fact that William is a Reelsmith with no compromise. He will not rush the process because each reel is special and deserves quality attention. His customers and their satisfaction is all that matters. He also is one man, with a family and with friends ... that's important too.

I should also mention that William offers the option of a clean front face plate on his crafted reels, meaning no medallions.
I prefer the look with the medallions and also like the fact I have the Reelsmiths identity on each reel. William gave me the option of customizing the medallions as well. I opted for the one being his standard and the other customized, "Wide Drum G&P" with serial number below.

All of my reels are Gear & Pawl. William offers a disc drag option for both the traditional Round and the Raised Pillar models.

The reels have to be ordered left or right hand wind, they cannot be switched over.

Mike,

I was under the impression the you could just flip the pawl on the grear and pawl Olsons to change retrieve, but that the disc drag models were not reversible. Am I mistaken, or were you referring to the disc drag reels.

Thanks,
Gavin
