PM sent ... why?

can someone please explain the purpose of posting a message that says "PM sent"? I understand that "PM sent" is just shorthand for "I'm posting a public message to say that I sent you a private message." Why bother? What is the internet etiquette that I'm missing here?

my query isn't regarding any particular message posted about a message sent - just something I've been wondering for several years now ...

my guess is because a lot of times folks browse but are not signed in. if you're not signed in you can't see if you have a PM.

support your local tyers and the shops that support them

Sometimes you want to let others know that you are helping the person but prefer not to provide the information to the whole world. It lets others know that the person asking the question is being helped.

In regards to classified listings, could it be compared to "first one in, first served"? But its up to the seller if they really honor who "contacts" them first and if they follow through in that regard.

Other than that, I too don't understand why it's used that much elsewhere since I'm always signed on and once I hit my Speypages link, any PMs jump out first before I do anything else.

I see BF's point of surfing while not signed in could be the reason but if you're a member to a site, why would you not sign in? Doing some covert phishing?

Send a message via MSN to Salmon Chaser
I post "PM sent" to let the rest of you animals know i'am in line and trying to make a deal and show that i in line for the deal.
For the record,, 1st come(email or PM , or response) should always get the special treatment around here
I always deal with guys in the order they respond and i expect the same from sellers here.

I hear ya Salmon Chaser. I've been first to "PM" several times on some sale items and somehow they didn't pan out. I definitely follow first come, first served in the sales I may offer from time to time. At least I know I'm honorable from my end in that regard.

this thread made me look up and see if I had any PM's sitting in my inbox and sure enough....

I don't get many PM's from this forum and they don't go through my email so a PM note is a good thing, especially if it's over an item you buying/selling.

I think the first come first served thing is fine unless the seller specifies the "first I'll take it get's it" and the first six PM's are asking questions or what not and the 7th PM or public post for that matter states "I'll take it", in which case no. 7 is the winner.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

Two reasons

1. Incase I leave the screen on the Classifieds and the wife walks up all it shows is "PM sent" or incoming PM" she don't know how to get to the "PM" inbox!

2. Sometimes ( at least for me) if I have a question about the item I'll send a "PM". Then I'll let them know that one is incoming because unless I hit the refresh screen it takes awhile for a pm notification to pop up on the screen.

I quit with the pm sent a few years ago, but I can see the value in publicly declaring your intent to purchase an item. It seems that follow through on privately declared intentions has reached such a low, that "I will take it" doesn't instill the confidence you might expect.

The next time I sell something, I'm going to offer it to the 3rd person that responds. Just to make things interesting.

Some of us forget to check our little private message box and it serves as a reminder to do so.
