Poll design for Member Location

Ok, I have no idea on how to create a "poll" so please suggest editing for improvements. Please do not be specific to any particular rivers. I believe we are limited to 10 areas for a poll, so my initial quick thoughts are:

United States
- Alaska
- Northwest Pacific
- Southwest Pacific
- Midwest
- Great Lakes
- Northeast
- Southeast
International
- Canada
- Europe
- Australia/New Zealand

I am sure we can improve on what I have thrown together above. I am sure I have missed a bunch quite a bit.

Around 10 years ago (or who knows how long) I posted a poll here asking how far people travelled to fish two-handed rods. I was surprised to learn how many site participants did most of their two-hand angling far from home, in destination fisheries. Perhaps that's changed now that two-handers are being used more for trout and warmwater species.

Point being: word your poll carefully. Asking for people's location ain't the same as asking where they fish.

SSpey - great point. Let' make it specific to where that responder typically fishes, which I think is more to the point of what the poll is looking to establish. My fishing ranges between 3 locations, the closest involves a 1 hour drive and the furthest 2,500 miles of flying. So, voting should allow for multiple fishing locations fished on a regular basis if needed. Again, not sure if the way a poll can be created allows for this option. Thanks

I am going to wait until Saturday to see if there are any more suggestions on putting the thing together. If not, I will go with what I listed and specify it is for whatever general areas that you fish. Unfortunately, if the poll is limited to 10 item locations, I guess we will specify it for freshwater only even though I am sure some people might fish saltwater. Maybe Mike can offer some guidance here.

In your quest for "aggregated angling information" remember also that hoity-toity fly anglers don't want to hear it called a "fishin' poll"

For international destinations I would add Russia (one category could include both Atlantic and pacific options) and Latin America...Iím not sure ďsoutheastern North AmericaĒ is a good option for swing fishing but as my own North American anadromous fishing is confined to the pacific coast from Oregon north Iím quite uninformed about that region.

Adding the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest would also be useful. That way people in WY and CO and UT and NM could localize their locations.

My take on this is that you just canít do any justice with 10 options. I think youíve broken the US into too many regions if you are trying to include other global destinations, but even if you just broke the US into 4 regions (west Coast, East coast, central, and Alaska) that still only leaves 6 options for the rest of the globe. Lumping Canada as one region is also extremely broad; seems kind of necessary to break that down to at least eastern and western Canada (minimum!). The suggestion for ďLatin AmericaĒ is good, but also Waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too big for one single option. Not trying to dump on your idea; I think itís a cool idea, but maybe a single poll option is too limited for what you are hoping for? Maybe multiple polls, by continent? Maybe trying to rethink the question a bit: such as focusing on just some of the more popular regions (or perhaps a focus on less popular regions)? If I have any better suggestions, Iíll certainly offer them.
