Stolen Boat on the Yakima River Today!
What a weird day; wanted to try out a new rod so I decided to float a short section of river in the lower canyon. It was about 37 degrees when I passed by Reds Fly Shop and pretty calm. By the time I drove a few more miles downstream, the temperature jumped up to 55 degrees and was blowing about 25 mph. As a stood at the boat launch, trying to decide whether to launch the boat or not, I snapped a couple of pictures. The take out was only about a mile downstream so I planned on just walking back to the truck at the end of the drift. At the time I didnít think it might be the last time I saw my boat.
With the wind blowing more than I wanted to deal with, I decided to drive back upriver and try a spot just upstream of Umptanum. Again, it was about 17 degrees colder there (even though it was only about 10 miles away) but it was a lot calmer. Weird weather! Because my waders were in the back of the truck, I unstrapped the boat, set it on the ground and put on my waders. It was a very wide spot on the road so I decided to leave the boat on the ground and went upstream a hundred yards or so and made my way down to the river. For a brief moment I thought leaving the boat there could be a little risky but quickly dismissed it because 1) I was only a hundred yards away, 2) I was only going to fish about 15 minutes, long enough to try the rod out, 3) it was getting late and there was not a lot of traffic, and 4) even though the boat is pretty small, it is still 9 feet long and would take the right vehicle to stop and take with it without really planning on it in advance. I figured it would be safe in the short amount of time Iíd be on the river and the short distance away.
Well, apparently in the 15 minutes that I was fishing, a person did drive by and stole the boat from along the side of the road. I have said it before after getting an outboard motor taken, thieves suck but I guess that is the world we live in now. The boat certainly is unique; probably the only one of itís kind in the entire world; only because I put a few extras on the boat that nobody else has done. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the person to stole it!
