I will be in Sacramento on September 19 for work and am considering extending the trip for my first attempt at Pacific steelhead or salmon. Am I going to be too early, or could it be worthwhile? Any suggestions for rivers or guides would be most appreciated. I'm open to traveling several hours out of Sacramento.
The lower Trinity and lower/middle Klamath rivers will have Steelhead and Salmon then. Not sure about the Feather river, which is closer to Sac town. It may have Steelhead at that time. I would do some web searching.
Your best bet close to Sacramento for steelhead is the Feather River near Oroville. About 1.5 hours from Sac. Mostly hatchery steelhead but still fun to catch. Contact Fly Fishing Specialties or Kiene's Fly Shop for more specific info. Trinity and Klamath would be better choices but the Trinity is 4-5 hours from Sac, depending on where you fish with the Klamath even further away.
