WA WDFW director tries out fake news

In an interview conducted by an underling, new WDFW director, Kelly Susewind suggests likely changes to the Columbia River gillnet reform agreement, saying that gillnets ARE selective... the ONLY two ways they could ever be, bear no relation to the regulatory agreement (either they can be deployed in areas not used by mixed stocks, i.e. out of main channel or they can crudely select for size with different mesh sizes, which will still intercept larger steelhead (3, 4 salt) along with wild chinook.
Before OR governor Kitzhauber brokered a deal, this issue was to be voted on in Oregon. Both states are walking back the reform measures, pandering to commercial fishing interests. Voting citizens need to decide whether recovery of ESA listed salmonids is more important than allowing the continuation of the principal reason fish populations are in jeopardy in the first place.

Ironic that sport angling far outpaces commercial fishing's economic contribution. There are still tentacles that remain from the old Dept of Fisheries... which did exist to support commercial fishing.

Economic and ecological contribution. I know a couple commercial guys in Newport, and none of them give anything back to the resource. It's the recreational (especially fly) guys that give money and time to conservation and restoration efforts 100%.
