West Babine Fire R41913

Things getting a bit serious around the NW. Of interest to SpeyPagers the West Babine River fire has burned about 1,050 hectares. This fire is being monitored and a structural protection assessment has been completed for the Silver Hilton Lodge.
I’m heading to work the Torkelson Lake fire on the west side of Babine Lake tomorrow. A number of large project fires in the Hwy 16 corridor, including the Shovel Lake fire at +50,000ha.
My son is on a unit crew at the Nadina Lake fire which is 25,000ha and a serious concern. Pray for rain folks.
Steve

Shovel Lake fire is 70,000ha, Nadina Lake is almost 50,000ha. Reports of some heavy equipment loss and a number of homes.
Island Lake fire at 15,000ha and Verdun Mountain is 6,000ha. The risk is that some of these could join. These are just the highlights of ~600 active fires in the province. Fire and air crews and equipment operations working their ass off. If the wind would cooperate it would be a great help.
The landscape is changed.

Back side of the Dean is burning up too. Takia Confluence with the Dean is on fire with the last update, but winds have shifted the wrong way in the last couple days. Extremely limited visibility out here. Bad year for fires.

Pope FSR fire (R41980) 10km from Kispiox River is "only" 450 hectares, but that fire and an adjacent one another 10km inland periodically fill the Kispiox Valley with smoke. Meanwhile, drought means the river is at its lowest summer-fall level in at least a decade, and too warm for C&R fishing.

On the good news front, as of last week fishing in the Skeena near Terrace was productive for several people I met on a short (non-fishing) visit.

The method doesn't matter to the fish.

Fires

Visibility less than five miles here in Portland. We all need to exercise extreme care out there, so that lightning is the only cause of wildfires. That is bad enough.

Tweedsmuir Fires behind the dean have merged and is now 200 000 Hectares. Smoked out, darkness until mid morning-midday some days. You can't see your line lay out in front of you.

Just got off of Babine Lake fire (Torkelson L). Looks like the West Babine River fire isnít threatening the steelhead lodges anymore. The structural protection units had the lodges blanketed with sprinklers and hose lays. It is now 10,000ha with 0% containment, but classed as a wilderness fire not threatening humans, property or improvements. It will not be actioned. My son is on days off from from the Nadina fire, south of Houston which is now a 85,000ha. Shovel Lake near Fraser Lake is ~100,000ha. Winterís coming I hear. One of these days Iíll get to go fishing.
