Along a mean ditch called Skagit
Not quite a newbie, but a newbie nonetheless, I've come out of hiding. It's been so long that I no longer remember names, though a few user names I can still recall. I hear Dana and Juro are no longer aboard, and wonder about sinktip and OC, two great guys from the past. I wouldn't be surprised if Fred Evans isn't around somewhere. If you are there, Hi guys!
I'm an old timer, a veteran, and I can't dance a lick. I've been off chasing little bitty trout for the past 15 years or so, leaving the old spey rod behind as the steelhead runs crashed in the Skagit. Raising babies with a young wife seems to define those years best. Now I am retired, a valve or two askew, and a 5 year old grandson who calls me "old school" that I care for. It might be all down hill, but it is a hell of a good ride. It's with this contentment that I brought out the long rods this past summer. Well, a short long rod. A 10ft, double handed 7 wt. Orvis rod that never fit in before was given the chance to break loose with an OPST line that I couldn't help but notice with all the chatter. I had a blast, throwing my back out several times as I cast, poorly, while I played with the dollies. So inspired, I broke out the long rod, an old Orvis 14ft. 9wt., bought a new reel and line system and pretended that I could spey cast. There's some video of it, bad as it is, on my friends YouTube channel. You ever have those instances where what you are doing hurts, but you aren't about to quit? Yeah, it hurt and it was good. Ah, the back's shot. Too much whoopie-do as a young man in the back of my girlfriend's VW bug. The impossible, made possible!
So here I am after sitting out Skagit's short steelhead season with a sore back that comes and goes, enjoying my little buddy and thinking about getting out and casting with a dummy fly as soon as the snow melts. Thinking and doing - now that has been a downfall of mine. And why I decided I could use the banter of other men to inspire me. I'm back!
