Hello from San Diego/Baja
OK - let me tell you how I got to these pages...
Last week I got home from another awesome Baja fly fishing trip. We were kayak fishing in a mangrove estero half way down the peninsula targeting small grouper and corvina using 8 weight rods and clousers. One day, while cruising up to the nearest town for a beer run, we came across a bunch of locals fishing the surf, later to find out they were fishing for really big corvina and pargo. The next day we hit up that spot with our fly rods, but none of us could cast far enough with our conventional 8 and 10 weights with sinking lines. As a last resort I took out my conventional gear, and was able to cast a plug to where the fish were - picking up both a large corvina and a large pargo, the only one of us to catch anything.
Of course I immediately started planning on how I could get the right equipment to get a fly out to where the fish were, which lead me to a two handed surf rod of some sort. Hours of internet research lead me to these pages as I was looking for opinions on an Echo FG-8130 (because I'm not rich and will not pay more than $500 for a fishing pole).
So here I am - I know diddly about spey casting (but learned that I will be able to hit the last Long Beach Casting Club Spey Clinic on July 5th - again thanks to this forum).
As I learn what the art of spey is all about I'm sure to be asking lots of questions.
