New member from Toronto, Canada

Greetings to all, on what looks to be an interesting and very informative forum.

I live in the west end of Toronto with Lake Ontario at the end of the street. I fish waters all around southern Ontario for all manner of species using many methods and various types of tackle.

I have made a few bamboo rods over the last (almost) twenty years (again) with various species in mind, matched with traditional and often suitably vintage reels, usually Hardy's.

Making many types and styles of rods for various methods and fish keeps the hobby of rod making interesting for me. Every two years we have a gathering at Belwood lake where like minded individuals from both the US and Canada share ideas and show and tell - Canadian Cane, which is very enjoyable.

Though I have been a fly fisher since the mid 70's, in the UK where I grew up, I have only tried the double handed approach for steelhead over the last two years, and what an exciting new challenge it has turned out to be. I have recently completed my second bamboo spey rod, this time a hollow, almost replica, of an 11' Hardy Wye, which feels very light in the hand, though I am waiting for the rivers around here to clear so that I can actually try it out.

By profession I am a graphic designer/ illustrator and college design instructor.

Regards,

Malcolm

Welcome, lots of Ontario folks here and an incredible amount of information on this site. I haven't been yet but the Grand river spey clave takes place in the fall near you, would definately be worth checking out.

Welcome Malcolm. The Ontario spey community is strong and you will find many of us here. As Dan mentioned, the Grand River Spey Clave (happening Sept 17-18 at Brant Park) is something you must attend. If the polar vortex persists, you may also want to attend the Izaak Walton Fly Fishing Forum and Film Festival at the Holiday Inn in Burlington this coming Saturday April 9 http://iwffc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2...albrighter.jpg

Have we met on the Grand? I recall having a pleasant conversation with a gentleman named Malcolm last fall at Five Oaks.

Apologies for the delay replying.

Firstly, hi Shawn. I have cast the bamboo Hardy Wye rod which I recreated and found that when a friend and I 'tested it' this week it cast most crisply with a 350 grain line, in this case a Rio Scagit Flight. It is a hollow rod as mentioned and it seemed to slow slightly with the 375 weight.

Not sure if we chatted on the Grand, Larry. If I sounded like a Brit. it would have been me. Yes, I have been to, and enjoyed, a few of the Grand Spey Claves in the past.

Hi Peter, we may have crossed paths at the Grand Spey Clave, but I would not have brought any of my bamboo rods along, this one was only recently completed.

Ah - Ha !!!
No wonder you're able to duplicate the Hardy script on your rod - a professional graphic designer/illustrator no less.
James complimented you on that script on another forum.
It is a pleasure to see what individuals bring to the art of fly fishing and especially the art of rod crafting.
Lovely rod! Go get it bent on a fish!

May the fish make you smile!

Ok Malcolm #2, that makes sense. Hard to pick the brain of a hard-luck dry fly addict though. I'm writing this in Smithers right now and the dry fly fishing has been challenging to say the least. Larry
