Bruce was commenting to the point that 5wt is the outer edge of a trout rod. I concur the choice is as much governed by water, trout you are searching for and the size of fly. If I am on the revere Wharfe, an Anderson 1173 with spiders would be awesome. But on some waters at the sea, I have no issue with 5 or larger.

A 5wt on the Gunnison in September, when it maybe trout or Kokanee?

A 5wt when I want good sink, to get into a POOL.

A long 5wt for a large river.

I can construct a list for 3wts too.

For the rod manufacturer's the good news, there are many reasons for 3 and 5wt, and to own more than 1

My Meiser 14246-5 with a 400g SGS mid-belly Scandi is my setup. It works great here on Montana's larger rivers. I use sink tips of my own design for a few situations. It's fun to cast, shoots a mile and trout of a foot or more make it dance.

My 2 handed trout rods include an Echo 3wt switch, Redington Hydrogen 4wt, and my precious Meiser S2H12634MKX-4.

For the type of fishing I do (swinging on the Lower Sacramento River) I like the 12'6" 3/4 MKX because it is light enough for 14" trout but stout enough for much bigger fish. I use a BC Scandi line, around 330 gr, or a 300gr Rage.

I have a couple of 12'6" 4/5 and 5/6 rods but these rods haven't seen much use since I got the MKX a couple of months ago.

No. That was DDB who voiced an opinion in favour of the 5wt boundary.

Bruce was just bragging. Plain and simple.

Big flow, occasional gusting winds, many trout > 50 cm. I could readily imagine a 6 wt coming in handy.

Science is not common sense. Much of it is devoted to a systematic documentation of what we do not know and understand.

Year before last I got an ACR 5120 that throws a sweet dry line with the Godshall line it came with, or the 6 wt 40+.

I fish all of them with a 3 5/8's Perfect.

Im thinking of putting a 3 5/8 perfect on my sage one 4wt. Should work nicely
