Thomas & Thomas - True Micro Spey

Late last year I test cast the new T&T Contact Euro Nymph designs for Single Hand Spey casting, really liked the flex profile of the new light weight rod.

Visits and discussions with T&T resulted in a new 11'3" 3wt Contact with cork from the Switch Rod series and custom wood reel seat and two over sized stripper guides.

My goal was a true Micro Spey with grain window under 200gr for small wet flies and soft hackles.

Line testing today started with OPST Commando 175gr with 5ft floating tip @ 20gr for total of 195gr with addition of 5ft polyleader and tippet. The line would cast however, the belly plowed or dropped prematurely which indicated too heavy with not enough line speed to unroll.
Changed to OPST 150gr head with 5ft floating tip for 170gr total. This was very nice and unrolled with tight loops and good distances. This combination will be used for medium sized Muddlers and buggers with modest weight.

Next test cast a RIO Trout LT in WF6F with hand tied 15ft leader. This was excellent and would cast short or long distances with great tight loops and nice turn over. The line will also present dry flies very well.
The AFFTA standards for WF6F is 160gr @ 30ft and I estimated about 30f ft of line outside the rod tip. I will mark the line with Sharpie when the sweet spot is determined. This Trout LT line has a very long front taper of 20ft with overall head length of 47ft. With the very long front taper and 15ft leader, soft presentations are expected. Earlier discussions with Simon Gawesworth indicated that he likes this line for single hand spey casting with light trout rods.

I discussed this custom rod with T&T and they stated it would be available on special order however, not scheduled for catalog or production in the future.

Regards,
FK

Great to see you FK

How about some pictures?!

I would love to play with it. I'm picking up the 6w 13'5 (400g scandi) after I go down for a visit and test cast. I'll also look at the 12'9 5w which throws a 325 scandi. Usually add 25g for their skagit from the scandi. Their grain windows are precise and I like that

I love my DNA 5w @300 scandi and 325skagit

J. James,

I have one of the very early DNA 1195 rods, we developed the rod with Tom Dorsey when it was a prototype.
One of my favorite 5wt short Spey rods.

I agree on the 300gr Scandi and really like the RIO Scandi Versitip in 320gr,,, in addition, try a RIO Skagit Short in 375gr. this line will cast any tips you wish and drift down a seam very easily.

PM when you will visit T&T, I can bring my new 11'3" Micro Spey and some lines for the DNA 1195 to test cast.

Regards,
FK

Awesome!

I really can't thank you enough. That's very generous. If you're that close to the factory then you and I can't be too far apart either

I have a good time with Joe G. and of course I marvel at Troys art, especially a boo spey

Thank you very much

We also worked with Troy on the bamboo Spey, once the lines were fine tuned, it casts rather nicely.
He likes traditional DT lines and I gave him some DT12F and DT11F for Atlantic Salmon fishing.
They have sold quite a few of that rod, beautiful craftsmanship.

I am in NW CT and not really that close, about 2 hours, well worth the drive.

Regards,
FK
