8/9/16 Dear diary . . .

I have been fishing the great river for some 6 weeks now. The fish taunt me, jumping and leaping in front of me, above the run, below the run. I have changed my lines from subsurface to surface and back and forth again and again. I have drifted and skated, swung and retrieved to no avail. It appears hopeless. I have made the effort in the early hours when it is cool and the late evenings when the last hours of day light glimmer and fade into night.

I made attempts upon water releases thinking the fresh cool water may entice a take as well as when the flow is restricted and again, the fish ever present mock me for weeks. I stand helpless as the sip and churn and flail as if to just tell me everything I know is futility. My sanity is breaking especially when I watch the gear guys spin in large rainbows

Im hanging up my rod and flies until I see a drastic change in temperature reduction or so I tell myself but I know I'll just be right back on the water some other place, beating, hunting, and patiently wondering WTF I'm doing wrong . High summer is like high winter - tough or perhaps a time to engage new activities despite the compulsion to grab rod and reel every chance presented

You?

In this weather, I work on my honey-do list. You know, replacing windows, building/staining decks, hosting 100 people for a wedding on our lawn, being the officiant in said wedding, building a wood shed. Making a rod rack for a customer. Getting the odd steroid injection in my spine. The usual August stuff. Fish'll be there in the fall.

Already have! It's a blast. I love anything involving water activities especially when my daughter can be a part of it. Occasionally I get moments to myself and of course I run to see what's shak'n on the river

I haven't adjusted to the transformation of local fishing due to climate change. It's significant here. This time of year used to be the high point. Now it's spring, fall from Feb-early May and mid Sept-early December. June July and August are bust as is January and most of February and sometimes early March

But the fish are present - in fact quite active just not interested in anything I throw

If (your) misery loves company, here's some… I've yet to catch, or even hook my first summer run this year. I've not put in the match for your efforts, but enough to be 'down in the mouth' over results thus far. Chinook will be along soon to displace the steelhead that share their streams -- always a tough time and includes low water… just what I need, more challenge .

High Summer can be the same in our part of the world too.....there tends to be a Smorgasbord of food available to all fish.
I often use the largest, uglyest fly in the box and sometimes hook up.

Hi Eric,

I do appreciate your sympathy. I don't know if I'd go so far to say it's "terrible".

"Terrible" might be unrequited love or falling for a beautiful woman only to discover she has an std - that my friend would be "terrible"

This is plain irritating but at least I'm near the water! The gear guys feel my pain. There were three of them as I was skulking back to the trail and they offered me the sweet spot between them - super generous but I declined. Rotten bastards

Lol. Well I was at a loss for words. I'm at a point now where I don't care if I catch anymore. As long as I'm out in the water swinging or stripping a fly life is good.

As I say "Today I went fishing didn't catch a thing. Today was a good day." Meaning just getting out and being in the water. The fish just make it 1000 times better.
