Opinions please?

hey all! I just tied this intruder style fly, using marabou. do you think its to bulky? should I cut back on the marabou some? my main intentions for this will be swinging for trout (browns, brookies , landlocked) , on my 5wt. SH I converted to a DH. Any and all thoughts would be great!

Nope leave it just as is. I think its going to be killer once it gets soaked and those fibers start moving. Fish it deep.

I have been using steelhead flies like twin tube bunnies and such. I haven't been catching the numbers, but the fish are much bigger. I get a lot of strikes where the fly gets hammered, but no hook ups. I figure the fish are just slamming it in the middle or are biting onto the material, but not the area that the hook is. When I switch to softhackles or traditional wets, my numbers shoot up as well as my hook ups, but I get a lot of fish in the 8-12" size. Big fly big fish?

It's a really interesting proposition

I started using size 6 and no smaller clouser X and had both size and decent numbers. Now I'm edging on 4,5,6 flies. The size 5 are all Spey flies. The 4s are basically steelhead flies like the above. I'm going to try and run these in a few spots and see if anything jives. I've read many times before via Greys Sporting Journal and the like that while you make go bust often with large flies, once you do hook up, it's one to remember

That being said, trout are as greedy as piranha. I've seen them stuff their mouths silly. They are predators as much as lions and will attack anything they think will fit in down their gullet

I think you should take it for a swim and let us know how it does. A little field research may be in order. Seems to me that fish will be the ultimate judge. I would swing and strip that with the utmost confidence.

Better just send a couple to Montana for me to try out and I'll tell you if they work or not

Yeah, I was thinking those would be great for the Yellowstone.

I'd probably tie some kind of head around the eye to make it look more like a sculpin profile but I doubt the fish would care and it would cast easier without the extra stuff around the eyes.

I wouldn't say too bulky but I have found, especially with maribou that more is less once it's wet. You can go sparser and still get a similar profile in the water and it seems to move better if it's not too bulky.
