tip/leader setup for swinging softies?

I'm curious what you guys use for swinging soft hackles for trout? Sink tip, floating tip, poly leader, how long/size tippet, weighted or unweighted flies? Obviously some of these decisions are based on water speed/depth but I'd love to hear your setup.

I've done a whole lot of 2 handed fishing for trout but it's always with about 10' of T8, about 6' of 8lb test and good size streamers. I'm thinking this similar setup is not going to work so well with small soft hackles.

myself

in generalities .....

If the water is fast, deep and-or dirty, after a rain I am likely to be using a scuplzilla or a rabbit-tube and a sink tip or the lightest, an intermediate. Will also use this setup to drop into a pool with sudden drops. The combination reflects not only how deep, but I expect to drop into pool-run.

Clearer, not as deep, and more of a run, muddler - conehead or marabou muddler on an intermediate or T3. Maybe a stiff leader.

So the above flies, I am playing the bait fish card.

Clear, runs, riffles and mild pocket water where it has been dropping Soft Hackle on a 2H rod is likely on a long leader. Only weight is from the hook. Some flies are on light hooks, others heavy.

But with soft hackles, I am thinking emergence, so no fast swings or strips.

swinging soft hackle

A scandi with 10 ft. int. polyleader plus enough tapered leader to make the polyleader + leader = 1.5 the rod length. Works great!

We have done this for many years in New England.

Scandi lines are the first choice.

Leader with Maxima, tapered as you wish,,, and tippet of your choice, flouro or mono, brand of your choice.

Leader + tippet about 1.5x rod length total.

Change tippet (5x or 6x) length to modify depth and presentation.

If you wish to drift the soft hackle deeper use a heavier wire hook.

Presentations are downstream about 20 degrees or less,,, and let the fly sink then rise up at the end of the drift. Down and across 45 degrees is not as effective. No need to set the hook,, the trout slam a downstream dead drift.

Upstream dead drift with indicator also works well. Here you will need to be sharp and set the hook from indicator movement or lack of movement.

We have several manuf. with new introduction of 2wt and 3wt Trout Spey rods that excel for this type of presentation.

FK
