Caution

After making a post on Spey Pages, a message was received, I hit the link, my computer was immediately frozen with a notice that my Microsoft operating system had detected a virus that needed to be isolated and to immediately contact 1-855-382-4197 in order to restore my computer. To make a long story short, our technician had me call the number, ask pertinent questions, while he contacted Microsoft Tech support. The threat was a scam. Beware, do not respond to private messages received from fellow Spey page members outside of the web site with a link back to the website.
In the event this should happen, immediately shut down your computer, reboot, and initiate recovery procedures to a time prior to posting. Inspect your program list and delete all unknown programs.

Can you please pm me with the message you saw? I need to investigate this.

Sorry this happened to you. Not to put too fine a point on it but ANY such popup message like that is a scam. There are some ways to protect yourself from such scams that might work more in the background, but unfortunately the best protection is know both how your own protection works a bit, and to know that, even aside from viruses, there are people and automated bots out there trying to get enough information about you to do an identity theft at some point if possible. Hopefully, much like that "Nigerian Prince" so many of us have heard from over the years (a scam that is actually about 100 years old) people will know immediately what is going on.

I should also add "never call the number listed on the scam". The information that there is a "live one" there may be all that they want, if that is one of the scammer phone numbers. If you are not unlisted they now have an email and a phone number that are linked on a database somewhere, unless they got you to tell them more. Probably not enough yet, but these guys are playing a long con. Knowing what is going on out there and acting accordingly is your best defense.

I'm getting something similar maybe 6 times now past few days...

Android phone, chrome browser.

Browser hijack freezes me off the page and vibrates my phone when I click something on the site... only on this site does it happen.

I'm paraphrasing but...

"Android Virus Centre
Your Nexus 5 Phone has been compromised with 4 viruses etc etc... Click link to download antivirus from play store"

It's only on this site I have ever seen that...

I'm still waiting for someone to forward me that PM. I'm not getting it but I'm curious as to what this is. it's very likely a phishing scam.

I've had this on my Android phone from time to time, using Chrome, but never on either of my PCs, also using Chrome.

I first noticed this happening about 1.5 months ago. It sort of comes and goes. When it comes, its fairly persistent, but then a few hours later, its gone.

This isn't a client-side issue, and should be brought to the attention of the web hosting service Dana has contracted with.

Send a message via Skype™ to Hardyreels
I have not received such a message but have had a bad experience in the past.

For what it's worth: prior to the current owners taking over Spey Pages I one day came across a post titled 'Are These Flies Worth Anything?' or something very close to that wording.

I opened the thread and there were no pictures on the post. The post contained a Photobucket Link and I clicked the link.

I was taken to something that somewhat resembled a Photobucket Album but the flies on the page were not even similar to ones I had previously thrown away myself.

Before I could close the tab it was too late. The result was all files in that computer corrupted and lost. I had to replace the hard drive. I did contact Dana back then from another computer to report the post also.

For this reason I Do Not Click on Re-Direct Links period. I help run a forum myself and we urge members to report re-direct links.

Results may vary per user but my experience with taking any link posted in a thread resulted in loss of many valuable memories.

So yes, caution.

Mac or not Mac is not the issue and it would be unfortunate if someone might believe that Macs are immune from security problems.

People do write malware for macs and I-devices now and it's incredibly irritating and some gets malicious, phishing scams are universal
