Indiscriminate harvest must end

It's time to outlaw gillnets and move toward weirs. Native harvest should be prohibited until escapement is reached.

That's disgusting!

I can't in my mind understand how this kind of thing is allowed to happen. That's a crime.

Where it all begins...

Looks legit but it doesn't matter. By catch of steelhead or any other fish, just killing indescriminantely matters big time. That's the entire problem in the PNW. Gill nets suck in every way imaginable. They should be outlawed everywhere.

Our rivers/fish deserve better than this. No nets-nowhere-no how-no exceptions. Hard to understand why this tread is so bare.??

More truth to this than most might contemplate.

You look at the 'dollar value' of sport fishing vs. what the 'commercial harvest' adds .... and it's a no brainier. 4 or 5 to one for sport fishing if you add all the ancillary costs into the mix.

Want to get into a serious rant here, but its a 'no win' situation for the sport fisherman.

Fishermen got very creative on how to take out a net on the Skagit River. A bale of hay could do a hell of a lot of damage. Got to be quite a 'Cat and Mouse' game with the Warden's and Washington State Patrol. They were just doing what they were ordered to do ... we did what we needed to do.

A fully water logged bail of hay could weight several hundreds of pounds as it rolled along the bottom of the river. Thing would rip a gill net right out of its anchor points.

Bust up a bail and it would make a hell of a mess out of a clear nylon net ... fish could see that even at night.

Or so I'm told.
