Vancouver Island river restoration film

Just spotted this fascinating short film about whole-catchment post-logging restoration on Vancouver Island, via the Central Westcoast Forest Society...

Every VI angler, visitor or resident alike, needs to read Paradise Lost by Craig Orr.

Thanks for posting this Theo. I've forwarded it to some of my partners for inspiration. Its nice to see that others are swimming upstream, yet making progress in these tough times. If anyone else has similar good news stories I'd love to hear them. The groups that I'm honoured to work with need to know they are not alone.

JB - I forgot about that article by Orr a very good read, but depressing because the trends continue ten years later. The legacy on VI is a testament to man's stupidity. Haig Brown''s quotes are always inspirational, but I wish he wasn't such an accurate prophet of doom.

Yes that is a great group. A few years ago my good friends at TUC brought Ken Kirby of the NCES over on a tour Ontario rehab sites followed by a keynote speech at the Annual Grand River Water Forum. Lots of great conversations during that tour with many kindred spirits.

I always thought it would be neat for him (or anyone) to do a follow-up - some of the streams have come a long way in the almost twenty years since.

You might not want to watch it, as it is quite depressing, but Youtube user cradel3 has a lot of old War in the Woods footage that shows a lot of the stuff that Craig Orr talks about in his article.

As for the legacy, there is a lot to be learned because the exact same issue with different resources is being played out in Northern BC.

Cheers guys... always a pleasure to spread the word about great work by the other river restorationists out there.

Although it's sometimes deeply depressing, I find it fascinating to study what went wrong for so many rivers in so many different ways - because only by understanding what went wrong for them can we really hope to put them right. Just don't get me onto the subject of why as the general human race we seem to find so difficult to learn from our past mistakes before making them all over again somewhere else (Chinese industrial rivers anyone?!?)

Thanks for the video. I just took a look at their website, and they have programs to try and get people into fly fishing as well by providing workshops and the like. Good to see some people take notice of a problem and take legitimate steps towards a solution.
