It is the top half of an intruder with Rhea fibers, appx 3-4" long. For a better look pls. see the other photo"Pink and Steel". For body I use an artificial sparkly hackle, then a few deer hairs spun and cut short (just enough to keep the Rhea fibers from collapsing), then a few strands of crystal flash, appx. six fibers of Lady Amherst Tail, then two rounds of Rhea and finish with a pink collar. For tail I use a strip of rabit.
For weight I wouldn't use anything but belleyes as the hook has to ride upwards. I used cones before, more aerodinamic but a lot of fish lost, now with the hook upward, my success improved dramatically and noticed way less injuries.
I agree with you, less chances of injuries. The colour, surroundings and action is what makes the fish stand out.
I have seen a few summer run steelhead this year, out of West Coast VI. Hope it will improve on the East Coast as well.
