I just saw this message and I apologize brother! I've head ipe is greenhearts' best friend when talking about build rods. I've never built with it as I've never found a source for it. I've only begun to look into woods and built small test rods but bring fishable. Tests with birch were promising, and red straight grained oak. Just be careful about the grain splitting. Intermediate wraps may be a good idea. I'd be interested in a shorter greenheart rod if you know where I could find one!

Greetings Nick, I noticed your post in the rod mandrel thread where you mentioned tapering solid wood.
I'm quite curious about. I'd be interested in what woods you might use or choose to use. I'm very aware of early greenheart rods, especially playfair spliced rods. I'm wondering if you have ever used a wood called IPE? I built my deck out of it a decade ago and when I did I also noticed some boards had extremely straight grain, think I could actually follow a fiber end to end on some 6' sections. Anyway, wondering what you're using and how it works and if you've ever tried IPE. Thanks for any opinion or input you'd care to share.
    Kind regards,
    Rolf
