Advise on 'cleaning' up an over oiled Redington reel.

The drag on my Redington AS 13/14 went to zero and finally figured out that I'd 'over-oiled' it and the drag washers were just sliding by each other on a thin film of oil.

Probably a simple fix but no 'easy' way to pull the drag area apart to really clean it off. Any suggestions before I just 'douse' it in some kind of solvent (which may be a realllly shi.....ty plan:confused: )

That is by far my largest pet peeve with the Redingtons...they are great reels for the dollar but their drags are heavy rat traps.

If need be, send it back to Redington and they will take care of you!

Follow TonyD's advice. I have spoken with a few fellows who had problems with their AL/AS since the re-buyout and sent them back to Redington and were treated with quick service.

Hope you aren't getting too shitfaced (as you said you would in an earlier post) but if you are, please, be my guest and keep on posting as their is nothing like reading posts derived from too much alchool in a short period of time, late at night! :devil: :hehe:

I totally spaced earlier and I was driving home, it dawned on me.

Track down Reel Magic or a like solvent. This stuff does one Hell of an excellent job cutting grease, oil and other 'crap' that can get into reels.

I use it on my casting reels as I prefer little if any grease (and a build up occurs overtime) because the less grease and crap in a reel, the farther it will cast.

Talked to guys at Redington (took several attempts to get a live body on the phone) and 2 recommended fixs. First was to soak the drag in mineral spirits to desolve the oil, clean and good to go. The second, if #1 didn't work, was to 'send it in.'

Blanched at what it was going to cost for a can of MS, but thought hit me is it's just a solvent. So out comes the can of Ronson Lighter fluid, out went the cigar, squirt, squirt, wipe, wipe and repeat.

The lighter fluid worked like a charm.

This particular design will allow oil to get into the drag system far too easily, so I'd recommend using a lube grease instead.
