SPEY CASTING CLINIC

DATES: MARCH 30-31, 2002.

INSTRUCTORS: Steve Choate (aka "Last/Longcaststeve) is an internationally know spey caster and is one of the featured casters at this year's Sandy Spey Clave. His name is often mentioned along with a handful of the world's best spey casters.

Way Yin M.D. (aka Spey Bubba) is almost as widely recognized as Steve and is also among the top spey casters in the world. When not spey casting, Dr. Yin is the Medical Director of Interventional Medical Associates of Bellingham, WA.

LOCATION: Denmon Bar/Modoc Ponds on the Rogue River just north of downtown Medford, OR. There will be instruction for the participants on Sat with video taping. Sat evening we'll have BBQ at sponsor's place with video play back/instructions. Then back on the river on Sunday for more hands on.

COST: for the weekend will be $250 including two continental breakfasts and gourmet riverside lunches and one dinner. Max enrollment is set at about 10 students. (Doesn't make that $250 sounds so bad now does it?)

EQUIPMENT: provided by Sage and Scott rod companies. If you ever wanted to try spey casting without purchasing equipment here is an opportunity.

B]PROCEEDS: ...96% OF THE 'TUITION FEE' WILL BE GOING TO YOUTH ORIENTED FISHING PROGRAMS. AS THE FUNDS FROM THIS PROGRAM WILL BE GIVEN TO 503C CHARITY GROUPS YOUR 'TUITION' MAY WELL BE FULLY TAX DEDUCTABLE.[/B]

CONTACT: FredAEvans@aol.com or (541) 857-0700, (541) 734-2714

Subject: class schedule

Day one (Saturday 30 March) Denmon Bar/Modoc Ponds river beach.
0800-0900: breakfast, introductions, distribute handout
0900-1200: brief history, demonstration, instruction on switch cast, single spey (river left)
1200-1300: lunch, demonstrations
1300-1530: go river right, instruction on snake roll, double spey- (Little Butte Creek access across-down river)
1530-1600: recap, review
1700-1800: video review of days casting

Day two (Sunday 31 March) Denmon Bar/Modoc Ponds river beach.
0800-0900: breakfast, review of questions from first day
0900-1200: river left, review and refine single spey, instruction on circle cast, square cut, snap-”t”, distance tips, sinktip fishing
1200-1300: lunch, demonstrations, single hand spey casting
1300-1500: river right, instruction on backhand techniques, etc. (Back across to Little Butte Creek area)
1500-1530: debrief, final comments, adjourn

I will edit video and provide master of class video to sponsoring shop/organization, up to shop/org. whether to make copies for students (very popular).

During class you will be limited to 'yarn' for fly casting practice. Two major reasons: Too darn many fish running under your nose at that time of the year in the upper Rogue. And we don't want anyone 'hooking' a fellow student. At lunch/after class I'd recommend you have an Oregon fising license.

Took a 'late lunch' at 330 pm yesterday, on river fishing by 4. By 630 had hooked/beached 4 winter fish (1 hatchery + three natives). Another 'good' reason why "no hooks" during class .... too many possible "distractions."

Great speaking with you today. Looking forward to some formal instruction with real live instructors! Trying to teach myself after repeatedly watching the Rio video is getting old. :eyecrazy: Shoot me an email as to who to make the check out to and an address to mail it to.

Make them out to Frederick Evans as I'll be setting up a special account here at Key Bank to cover the 'nuts' and for drawing cashiers checks to distribute the proceeds.

As said before!!!! To all. If you can supply me with the name, phone and or e mail of groups that provide active ongoing youth oriented fly/fishing programs for kids I'd greatly appreciate same. Only requirement (other than it's an active ongoing program) is the group MUST be 503c tax exempt.

The funds distributed out of this class are not ear-marked just for Oregon programs!!!!!! Speak up you Mid-Westerners-East Coasters!!

I have prepared and sent out a flier for the Rogue River Spey clinic with Steve and Way. I mailed fliers with cover letters to: Ted's Sports Shop, Kaufman's, Kiene's, The Fly Fishing Shop(Welches, OR), Bob Marriot's, Madison River Fishing Company, Four Seasons Fly Shoppe. If any one has other suggestions for likely suspects send me an email.

Freddie, Freddie, Freddie,

I'll bet you tell great fish stories! Those are kind remarks, but I am just a steelhead fisherman that loves spey casting and teaching others .... and in that arena I tend to follow Ways' lead in the classes...He is a much better spokesman than I. I do promise that everyone will have a good time and I am sure we can refund anyones tuition that does not...As far as internationally renown...I have a couple wonderful fishing buddies in British Columbia....does that count?

Thanks again Fred,

looking forward to the class!

While you may or may not be a world traveling spey caster, I think Fred's use of the term "international renown" in discribing your casting ability is right on the money since that ability with a spey rod was mentioned many times on Dana's International Spey casting board. Hell, we've even heard of you over here in north Idaho

Fred,

Great job of putting this together.

Please check out The Fly Shop in Redding Ca, www.theflyshop.com They have a neat kid's camp That I think you may be interested in. Week long teach kids to flyfish and tie flies. Mel Kreiger is involved as a teacher. I don't have their current catalog but you can check their website or call for details. Also, I think a lot of the bigger ccities like L.A. and San Francisco etc have some kind of program to teach kids about fishing.

fredaevans
02-27-2002, 02:46 PM
Rick, I've already talked to Rachel at the Fly Shop in Redding and sent her the info on the class. She will put me in touch with a Women's Fly Club through whom we can 'channel' the funds.

And to both "LCS" and "SB" I don't think the 'kadoo's' are a bit over stated; perhaps a tad understated. To assure all on the Board are aware, Steve and Way are donating their time/efforts to this cause (Steve actually was the one who brought up the donate to youth groups idea! Way chimed right in with a huge "Right On!"). Considering the collective talents of both of these Gentlemen, we (and the kids) all owe them a HUGE "tip of the hat."

Above and beyond the call.

Fred Evans

PS: Forgot to add: I've already got the wine laid in for Saturday nights dinner ..... but you get to bring the single malts.

thanks for posting the class schedule i sent. as part of my classes, i have been doing the videoing and editing to make a master, which has been time consuming, but very popular. am i to understand that you will be doing the video editing, or should i be planning on doing it? just a little confused...

we'd never have to fear winning an Emmy. You're on!! (Actually guys this was Way's original offer; I just screwed up the posting.

The real point of this is that "seeing" what, as in a picture is worth a thousand words, your doing/not doing brings a lot to your party.

Heck, good question!!! Anyone have a small portable AC generator that you could bring? I've got more than one VCR that we could plug a video machine into, small colour tv and do 'on the beach' feed back. Could be very cool .... but we'll all 'snigger' at each other over dinner and wine.

I'll probably be driving to Medford for the clinic on Thursday afternoon. I live in Hermiston, OR. I'll be traveling I-84W to I-5S. I'd be willing to pick someone up enroute. Maybe hope to fish on Friday if conditions allow. Or could change schedule to accomodate others.

And as an extra bonus pack!! a few of the folks are coming in early to fish the Rogue. The OFFICIAL fish count over Gold Ray (just north of Medford) was 500 fish the first week in Feb. Next count on 2-22-2002 had jumped to 2900 fish; as of 3-3-3002 we're at over 5000!!! in the top 20 miles of the river. And they're still coming, and coming, and ........ I haven't even mentioned the spring Kings that start to show by then.

As we're still at summer run flows a lot of your work will be with a dry line under sunny skys, but big question may be 6-8# leaders for the steelie's or 15# for the kings. Do I use that 8-9 spey and hope for the best, or if it's a king, how do you handle a rod that's bent over like a twig? 10wt???

So .... think of the possiblities: Fish a few days before/after, learn the best from the best (Steve and Bubba), have several good meals (and I've got the wine already laid in) .......

Jere, Joe and Jim: Got your checks and they're in the bank. Joan says a few more of these and we'll have a trip to Mexico covered.

Jere: Got your note on arrival time in Medford at 9:25 pm on Friday the 29th. Want to confirm what airline you're coming in on to assure someone's here to pick you up.

Now if you came in a day or so early you could 'hook up' with Joe and Jim for a few extra days fishing. Hell of a deal to travel all the way from Penn. just for the weekend. By the time you get here there will be well over 6000 winter runs above Medford. Looks like Joe's bringing his drift boat up from San Francisco and is very framilier with the river ....... think about it ........ :eyecrazy:

Worst case: like your planes early; home number in Medford is 857 0700 or 944 0404. Only 20 minutes max to airport so not a huge trip.

Must be the great marketing by you Fred.

Perhaps in future will be able to make it after I get some spey fishing under my belt here on home waters.

Could not just come for the clinic though would have to be actually fishing the Rogue or whatever river it was on.

Also March and April are prime time steelhead here in great lakes would be hard to pry me away during these months.

Best of luck with the clinic hope the weather and river conditions work out great.

I will hopefully be steelheading somewhere here on that weekend.

Well, I was inches from joining in but with a big family Easter dinner being at our house this year I could not manage the schedule and cross-country travel. I will certainly be attending one of these events sometime this year.

Thanks for putting it all together, perhaps next time for me. It was great pondering the possibility of attending and I envy all who can make it.

Anyone driving to the clinic from Portland? I'll be visiting my daughter's family (grand daughter should be walking very soon) and would be interested to know if anyone will be driving down on Friday and coming back either Sunday night or Monday morning. Fred, you were telling the truth when you told me there were very few Spey fisherman on the Rouge. Looks like most of the people coming are from out of the area.

Whats up with the locals ? (mostly gear fisherman with you know what)

fredaevans
03-09-2002, 12:31 AM
One fly shop has a guy (related to an employee?) who teaches 'spey casting' at something like a $100 bucks a pop. Or so I'm told.

I do it for free ..... well maybe a Taco Bell lunch gets tossed in to the pot. A lot of it stems from the stand point of local income levels arn't all that good. Average wage earner around here (leaving the Doctor/Lawyer/Merchant Chiefs out of the mix) is $7.50 to $10.00 per hour. Doesn't leave a lot of room for dropping a grand for a spey rod, reel, line(s), etc. Several of the folks I've taught (NO SNIGGERING OUT THERE!) are now died in the wool spey guys/gals. And this is a major part of the "why me." What I hope to learn I can pass on to others and build interest on a better way of 'how to.'

In the process I've met some of the best fishing buddies I've known in my 'kissing 60' life. These guys have made it all very worth while. Life because of them is good. If we don't fish together, they match up on their own. And you'll get to meet Nate and Dave, to mention a few. Without their help in organizing-executing this get together I'd be toast. LARGE TIP OF HAT to where credit is really do.

But you're point is well made; I'm disapointed that the local shops are not pushing the Clinic. Point being made to these folks is if 'their' clients get first level lessons, gear included, "they" may be well inclinded to drop the dollars to get the equipment necessary for spey rods, et. al. And if they don't purchase the equipment 'locally' they will spend it elsewhere. Like the horse: you can lead them to water .... And I'm happy to tell them where the water is ..... sorry if that sounds like a 'sour grapes' comment.

Major point is still there are a lot of first class folks who want lessons from the top of the class instructors. Best yet is where the funds will end up. If we get just a few kids going into fishing their lives will be all the better for the experience. Bread upon the waters? The groups where the $ will end up have a long history of putting "walk" into their "talk." Folks like these need every bit of support they can muster.

I like your idea re: sending me dinner, my wife would send it but that arrangement may not pass muster with the relatives if ya know what I mean. Maybe I could seat a manikin to sit at the table :hehe: Mostly I don't want my wife to have to feel like the fisherman's widow in a spanish inquisition, being my best bud and all. Even if she can't fish worth a damn

for Juro to be in Southern Oregon month end. Being he's going to a 'family affair,' we can't go there; too many follow up questions about "how's uncle Fred?" Business, CIA, FBI, kidnapping ... ?

And how you cover yourself properly Juro, is by bringing your wife along. The 'clinic' part of this weekend is 'lady-less' at the moment but there will be at least 2 or three wives with us on Saturday evening. Only ground rule for the ladies has been 'no sniggering' during the video replays.

Fred,

How many hours of spey casting instruction is that for $ 100 ? Sounds very expensive for Medford, OR. Must be the retired CA crowd taking those so they can tell their CA friends they are doing something very complex and sheik. I will jus take your free lessons some day.

There has not been a sport yet (other than golf) I have not been able to get to a proficient level on my own in a reasonable period of time that I needed instruction for.

With 42 years of single handed fly rod experience behind me I don't think spey casting will cause me to go that route. But we will see.

The sports I am talking about that I have played proficiently on my own, are baseball, softball. soccer, basketball, football, tennis, volley ball, racquetball, skiing (downhill & cross country), canoeing, rafting, hunting, running, spin fishing, fly fishing trout & salmon, musky, saltwater surf, women chasing:hehe:, etc......

Golf is the only one tht the progression has not been acceptable in, man do I both love and hate that sport. Got a season starting lesson with the local pro soon. My wifes girl friend is dating him and she got me a lesson for a christmas present. He did help for a while last year at the driving range with some tips.

How many other frustrated fly fishing golfers are there out there ? :(

fredaevans

you pretty well 'nailed it.' We're an interesting dicotomy around here. Ton of folks who would, in the best of times, not be considered "well off." The retired folks from ........ have "limited income" but assets out the wazanga.

Interesting to make a "low-moderate" special program home loan to someone who 'qualifies' as "low income" due to Soc. Sec., anuities, etc., but has (real situation) $4.5 million in verifiable assets.

Sorry if I'm a bit befuddled of late. Both Joan and my Mothers are not doing well right now. Mor than a bit distracted, but still on track.

For the folks who will be attending the Clinic March 30-31'st need to nail down your housing needs, number of days etc. A couple of folks (PLEASE REMIND ME NOW) will be staying with Joan and I, some need hotels (and I do have a good price nailed down).

So I can get a good solid track on the above please e mail me at Frederick_Evans@KeyBank.com or call me at 541 734 2714 asap so I get this handled next week. (Steve/Way this includes you)

Dave Kelly (wife Ann) has been a SOLID BRICK in helping me do the organizational 'things,' meal planning, etc. So when you meet him the end of the month a proper "tip of the hat" is totally appropriate.

Local folks think this too cool and have started to really pitch in with special rates, etc.

HOTEL RECOMMENDATION: Best Western "Pony Soldier" at 800 634 7669 (push 32 and you'll go directly to the facility). Tell them you're with the Spey Clinic and the rate will be $69.00 plus tax per night for a single queen. They have a few double queen rooms at about $10 more is someone wants to double up. Includes almost a full breakfast, micro-wave, etc. Nice place and about 15 minute drive to "The Beach." The Pony Soldier does have an airport pick-up service; pick up the phone and push xx for a direct connection.

For those of you who want cars they recommended Enterprise at 541 772 1200. Enterprise will bring the car to the hotel if you don't want to pick one up at the airport.

Fishing lic. for out of Staters: AND THIS INCLUDES THE STEELHEAD PUNCH CARD.

1 day $8.00
2 day 14.50
3 day 21.00
4 day 27.50
7 day 34.75

As Oregon fishing-game lic. is now all "on-line" you'll have to hit a sporting goods store to do the 'name, rank and tax id number. Usually these folks don't open until at least 8am but the "Out Door Store" at 2049 Roberts Road (541-770-7077), about a 5-10 minute drive from the Pony S., will open early if some of you want-need to get a license on Saturday morning. We just need to let them know so they can be good corporate citizens (good store, so probably wouldn't hurt if you dropped a couple of extra bucks.
:>)

Given folks will be coming in several days before/night before I'll unconfuse the issue of booking you all rooms. PLEASE GIVE THE PONY SOLDIER A CALL DIRECT. And be sure you tell them you're with the Spey Clinic so you get the corp. rate.

Two 'spots' to go so lets fill them up. This is turning into a true 'all USA' affair with folks from Washington, Oregon, Calif., Penn, New York and other far flug spots that don't come to mind.

Several guys are going to spend several days in the area fishing so pipe up if you're looking for some first class company!.

Wonderful e mail from "last cast Steve" on rods he'll be bringing with him to 'test drive.' I'm looking forward to this as several I've read lots about on the board but have never had the chance to try out. Daiwa Whisker, Norwich, Lamiglass golden west, burkeheimer's, Sage, Scott and, and and ...:smokin: I'll even have the 18' Bruce and Walker. For only a buck, you can cast a true tree. Just kidding on the tree part, but this is the most powerfull spey rod I've ever used. Run a RIO tri tip on it and it will cast the heavest tip 90+ feet + leader.

I'm sure several of us will have our own rods so this could turn into a mini-clave (no way this would replace the Sandy!)

Fish count over Gold Ray just north of Medford, as of 3-6-2002, is 5579 .... and they're still coming, and coming, and coming.

Fred and any other attendee's, I took Fred's advice and booked a sound proof room at the "Pony Soldier" to protect all from my terminal sinus condition (Olympic Class Snoring), and I'm wondering if there will be any others staying there that I could hook up with for transportation from the hotel to the beach? NO point in everyone renting a car. Help!?!

Jere et al,

I won't be at the Pony Soldier, but will be staying nearby at the Motel 6 ($39/night). I'm driving up so I will have my truck and will happily take anyone to or from the clinic. I'm also hoping to get a little fishing in Friday p.m. and all day Monday, April 1, so if anyone wants to fish before or after you just have to plan to share the truck with those two feisty little JRT's you see to the left. They're especially animated when they know they're going fishin'...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news. Fred lost his mother in law Tuesday afternoon. His mother is hanging on by a thread. He did not specify 5X or 6X but, understandably, his spirits were rather low.

There is no icon appropriate to convey the the deepest sympathies I'm sure we all feel towards Fred and his family.

First let me express my deepest sympathy to you and Joan. I hope that the spey class can help by bringing friends together and help you though this tough time.

Regarding the class, do you see any benefit if I bring up the jet boat? Might help to have it at the class site to get folks back and forth across the river? It is currently in Eureka but John B could probably haul it up for us. I will be coming up HWY 5 in my wife's car and staying with her relatives so will have to hope John can do this if you think it worth while.

Hang in there Fred - our thought are with you

Best regards,

But, you could store the boat at my place and I'd assure it was in perfect running condition ..........

Tested the river last night after work at Denmon. Three hook-ups, all on size 8-12 bead-heads. (Truth be told the fish were holding close to the beach in the flat water so I was using a Sage XP 7100). Been strange weather (like Seattle's for the past two days) so Poochie finally came over and "Wooooffff! It's damn cold out here; take me home!" As usual, Sheba was right, even I was a light blue. Actual temp was in the high 30's but with the wind chill factor it felt like it was in the 20's.

This is going to be an "All US Affair" with folks coming in from all over the US for the weekend, and longer. As noted before, the offical (and they really do count the buggers) is now over 6000 winter runs in the upper 30 miles of the Rogue. Blurb in the paper said they're even trucking fish to other areas that don't have 'natural runs' in the area.

Latest sign ups are as follows:

Mentors! Steve and Way.

Joe Currier
Rod Krahmer
Mike Adams
Dave Kelly
Jim Jones
John Barrena
Jim Eshelman
Bill Kessler
Mark Nickerson
Nate Bailey
Rick Jorgensen
Mike O'Brien (A new addition to the group. Have invited him to join the board.)
and yours truly.

Room for one more!! Remember this is a 'not-for-profit' affair so other than the hard costs to cover Steve and Way's air fares and lodging, and a few bucks for food, all net funds will be directed to restocking my stock of single malt scotch ..... no! no! Fred

From an earlier post from Rick Jorgensen that just didn't register in my pea sized brain.

"Regarding the class, do you see any benefit if I bring up the jet boat? Might help to have it at the class site to get folks back and forth across the river?"

(Doc gave me a short supply of 'little white pills' called "Alprazolam;" don't quite know what these things are, but they have gotten my head screwed back on in less than two days. Wonder if I can get a big bottle of these? :D )

Rick's idea is a GRAND PLAN as the river right is down stream perhaps 500 yards, but across the river. In his too cool jet sled, the movement would take minutes vs. everybody driving all over hells half acre to get to the other side of the river.

If the logistics work for Rick, this would be just too cool (and you go over some outstanding lay water ...... hooks will be allowed  )

I put a call in to Fish Head re: Guide service For Mon and Tues
after the clave and am uncertain whether or not a guide will be
available. I haven't heard back from him yet.

I'm not too mobile on the stream (would not be able to cover large walking) but am content working water thoroughly.

Anyone else staying to fish Mon & Tues? Looking for a rookie?

I don't particularly want to fish alone, there is security in #'s. I don't need anyone to hold my hand, but its nice to have someone to take the pictures.:chuckle:

Monday, but 99% sure that it would be a great day to take a vacation. Still have 18 days to burn this year; and I'm not going to leave them on the table like last year.

Lots of very easy walk access places on the Rogue, and I'm (wife's orders) a "chicken wader." So with felt/stud bottoms on your boots your good to go. Also with the low water a wading staff is only necessary in a couple of places (flowing water up to your knees) as a balance precaution (b ack to the 'chicken wader' part again). Well, maybe not chicken, but you don't fish as much as I do, get to sixty, and be 'bold.' Old flyer comment about 'old Pilots, bold Pilots, but no old-bold Pilots. :>)

Tweek me Monday if I'm not right back at you.

Got back from Calif. about noon on Sunday, on river at 1pm, give or take, fished til dark for a big 'skunk-aroo.'

As posted elsewhere offical winter fish count as of 3-11 (a week ago) was over 6,700 fish. By now it's likely to be over 7,000 fish in the top end of the river.

Nate says he is fishing size 12 nymphs and you questioned the sixe 8 and 10 great lakes flies I sent to you as to small for the rogue.

I always start small and go larger only when the water is high/colored out here.

Better give those nymphs I sent a go out there.

First .... offical count is almost 7,500 fish in the Rogue above Medford .... so why did I draw a blank Sunday afternoon? DON'T TOUCH THAT QUESTION!

Real point of post:

Some of you folks will have your 'significant others' Gracing us for dinner on Sat. evening. I need the proper name/spelling for name plates. And no, again, we will NOT have the paper stuff. The name plates will help the instructors, it will help you, it will keep some clown who walks up from asking to try a $1,000 worth of rod/reel, and etc.

As said above, we will be Graced by a few of your wives joining us for the dinner on Sat. evening; they will also have proper 'name plates.' (Asking "who are you" is not appropriate).

Please e mail me there 'proper names' so I can have these ready for them this evening.

Counts a bit out of date (3-17-2002) but Game Dept guys say now over 8,000 fish in upper river. Dam out-flow at 1346 which makes for perfect dry line/long leader fishing, with a few places good for sink tips.

Recommend flys (two fly rig) is a wted "otis bug" done up on a #6 and # 8 size 2X light wire hook. Otis Pattern is as follows:

Underbody: Copper or tung. bead head.
Several wraps of .015 lead wire for addl. wt.
Black rubber legs for normal day light conditions/white for early and late day fishing.

Body is Riverborn's "New Age Chenille, size two (medium?)in what they call "Copper-Gold-Black #29 (M00357029).

Very simple fly to tie, so bring lots.

Trailer fly can be a size 10-12 beadhead Prince Nymph, March Brown, small dark stone, or Hex nymph. Also light coloured small single egg patterns should be in your box. Lot of guys use the "McFoam" (or is that "McFly") material for the egg patterns (tie on a size 6 and 8 egg hook) rather that the bulkier Glo Bug yarn. I'd do some with, and without, the small 'bar-bell' eyes (for the extra sinking weight).

The key to the 'trailer fly' is to run it at least 30-36 inches behind the "upper" Otis bug. Fish will most likely take the trailing fly but I've actually had fish take both flys at the same time. That was 'fun' but not long before I got back the end of the leader with neither fly.

I'll 'draw' maps on where to find the fish (and with luck) get them properly posted/attached to the board today. But, as noted 100's and hundreds of the buggers in the top 2-3 miles of river below the fish hatchery at this point. Lots of easy public access on both sides of the river and still minimal pressure on the fish.

With all those fish you'd think they'd be getting the hell pounded out of them, but not really. Got to keep in mind just how few people live in this area (60,000 in Medford and about 180,000 in the whole county). Maybe 5% of them fish at any time so you'll have free river space 'out the gazonga.' Dave Kelly and I fished Sunday morning, and think we saw a grand total of maybe 8 or 9 other guys on both sides of the river below the hatchery.

Only 4 guide boats, including Andy Zwan (fish-head on the Board) passed by us over the same period. Soooooo ..... maybe just a few of you wouldn't screw things up too bad.:smokin:

I will be waiting in the parking lot of the Pony Soldier Motel near the front desk at 7:00AM and we will carvan to the river from there. I am 6' 2" with grey hair and beard and will be wearing a dark blue Reddington wading jacket and green Sage hat. To find a map to the Pony Soldier go to www.google.com and search for Pony Soldier Inn. It will be the first result. I tried posting the link but it's too long and was truncated.

The weather looks great, chilly in the morning but sunny and 60s in the afternoon. Earlier today they were predicting 70s but I see they backed off from that. Bring a broadbrimmed hat, sunglasses and pre-sun screen. In addition to warm clothes for early morning temperatures in the low 30s.

I wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone, especially Bill Kessler and Fred Evans in advance for selecting our program to be one of the recipients of the clinic proceeds. I am the Director of the Community Fly Fisher (CFF), a youth fly-fishing education program that uses apprentice/mentor based relationships to develop youth as fly-fishing educators and resource stewards. Based in Ithaca NY, we have a not for profit fly shop and education center that acts as a resource hub for all of CFF's activities. We are apart of the Cornell Cooperative Extension (4-H), but independently funded. It is hoped that the shop will help off set our need for soft money funding and continue to diversify our youth's experiences.

Till then we appreciate donations from groups like yourselves who understand our mission to:
"Encourage and educate the future steward of our resources through fly fishing education."

Thanks again and have a great clinic!!!

I cannot say enough about how great this turned out! Fred and Joan are just super hosts. Opening up their home to us as if we were family. I think I'll adopt them.

The streamside lunches provided by Dave Kelly were unbelievable. You just had to be there. And he took time out from his casting to set it up, not to mention that home cooked turkey loaf, the ham and the deserts! Nate Baley gave up some of his time as well, helping out with whatever was needed, and bless his little pea pickin' heart, showed up Sat night with a case of beer. Good stuff too.

Last, but certainly not least, the insruction provided by Steve and Way was outsatanding! These guys are good! Not only are they excellent casters, they are really good intructors, able to pick up on whatever problem you are having and show you how to correct it.

Well, I said "last" but,,,,,I can't quit without saying that I've never met a nicer group of guys. I'll always remember Jere yelling BOOOOM! whenever I hit a cast just right and nailed the other side of the river. What a great week end.

We've actually rescheduled our 10 day trip to see our grand daughter at the end of the April, when she'll be 10 months old. I hope I'll be able to break away for a day to fish the Sandy. I fished it for the first time last year the day after the Clave and was rewarded with a bright 10# hen. A repeat would be nice. Actually, what makes these get togethers work (such as the Sandy Clave) is Portland (Sandy Clave) is about dead center between the Canadian Boarder and San Francisco area. Direct fleights (even to Medford .... if you can believe that) so folks can get in and out without (to use an improper medifore) 'busting their nuts.'

As I'm sure you're aware the Sandy River is 30-45 minutes east of the Portland International airport; the Medford airport is about 20 minutes drive from where we held the Spey Casting Charity Clinic. Good deal on that last one as 4 groups (Joe: good contact today with Dave Cody at CalTrout vis a vis the Lake Merced project) will get a net check large enough to make a positive dent in their youth fishing programs.

Still trying to get Dana down here to 'sample' our river(s); may have to have some retired friends from the Delta PD pay him a visit and 'wisk him away.' (Even we 'ex-pat' Canadian's keep up our contacts with the Police)

Hal, you're right. The almost 2600 hits on this project blew Dave Kelly (avid1) and I away. Don't think there has been anything like this on the board before. But maybe this is just a true indication of how many folks want good instruction from folks like Dana, Steve, Spey Bubba, et al.

Best to you all!
Fred

Fred,

Who do you know on the Delta police force? I grew up in Delta and still live here. I too might have some pull! I may need them to get Dana to come and fish with Doublespey and I down on the Skagit this weekend.

Aunt Francis still lives in Twas. and worked for the Muni for 20 some years; retired 'out of there.' For those of you who were here last weekend, remember the 'bing-bong' clock in the living room; that was her retirement 'wrist watch.'

Actually haven't had any contact with these fellows in many years; suspect most are now in their 70's and early 80's. Will check with Francis as she worked with these fellows and get back to you. But, very interesting group of guys. True story: many years ago there was a Canadian woman with the same name as Mom's, but far to 'frisky' for her own good. Gal moved to Seattle and some clown looking for her found Mom's (same first/last name) in the phone book. The "phone calls" and a few letters began to arrive.

Read a couple, made a call and sent up a couple of sample "letters" north. As I understand the rest of the story, three large men paid the guy a visit in White Rock. Word back is they bea ..... well, lets just say no more contacts with Mom.

Interesting end to this was several months later there was an article in one of the Seattle papers that someone down from Canada, along with his 'girl friend' (ya, you can guess her name) got him self knifed in a bar room brawl on 1st Ave.

As to choice of rivers, used to love fishing the Skagit, more so the Sauk. Still think of the punch card records the year before/after the Bolt business went into effect. Some stories later on what a bale of hay could do to a net. Will check the Stat. of Limitations first.

Nate B and I had Mike O'Brien out for his first official spey rod fishing trip yesterday. About a half dozen different rods, dry and tips for him to try out. (Oh, to put this in context, Mike had never held a spey rod before the Clinic here in Medford).

Half an hour to get back into the flow, and boom! 'Nother hour and he asked if he could 'try' the Loomis gl3 8wt with the 15' 180'ish grain tip. (10 wt DT with the front taper snipped off and looped for tips) Couple of tentitive casts to get the feel of the different rod and using a tip, then darn near straight to Snake rolling the darn thing out 70-80 feet to the seam water.

Only time I think he blew one of these casts was when I hollered up river: "Sweeeeeet."

By this performance I think we can assume he paid attn. in class.:whoa:
