While not a steelhead video, the wild rainbows in this film approach that size.
This film is about some young adventurers mousing for giant rainbows through inner Kamchatka.
The film delivers some feeling about Russia in general, a couple snap-shot bits featuring Muscovites and their culture ---while they await the next leg of the trek in a typical Slavic rat-hole apartment. Later, the film slides into the bios of each of the 3 heroes.
They arrive and fish a somewhat accessible, outer river, then get serious and pack up a rafting treck into a most overgrown and even more remote interior river, and for the finale arrive at larger sea going river to look not for numbers, but the true giants and a shot at some anadromous suprises.
The cinematography and camerawork you'll find in this film is nothing short of world-class. To create this kind of art in a rugged remote area with limited resources and equipment impressed me to the 'nth' degree and demonstrates remarkable talent.
There's some young-style good humor and yucks peppered into it, including some time dedicated (with half a smirk )to investigating a local 'haunting' that makes me remember what it was like to be a 20-something goofball and I loved it. I caught myself getting jealous and starting to turn my nose up at this next generation;--- but quickly realized these guys are exactly like I was at that age-- just using different slang and clothing than me.
Oh yeah, and the music score and mood of the film IS a welcome departure from the recent "extreme-snow-board-grunge-red-bull-rock n'roll-no-limits-while-wearing-your-mp3" stuff. These guys make me happy to know that there are some generation Y guys who get it.
The fishing? Good Lord --its off the charts. If you don't get excited by actually observing rainbows competing to body-slam a blistering-fast mouse retrieve, you are without a soul.
This film is amazing. Only 40 minutes, but worth the donation to a group of indy-film guys working from their apartment, fomally called
FELT SOUL MEDIA. This is their 3rd production, and this time around got some serious sponsorship and well-deserved attention from the big boys of the outdoors world.
