Anyone use wearable video cams while fishing? I am considering getting one. Any advice much appreciated!

I've tried it on a fishing trip last year. Works pretty good but they are hard to aim and the video is quite shaky as any head movement gets picked up. strapped it on 3 times first time hooked and landed a nice salmon but i didn't have it recording. Second time i didn't hook anything and ran out of batteries and third time hooked and landed a small steelie. You can watch it on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhetQeQ59hY

I have a really cheap one Iview mini sport cam, it's not water resistant but was only $25.

Thanks for that...not bad for a $25 camera! That helps me picture what it might be like. Definitely better to have a buddy do the video but the POVs can get the take as well. Looks like a great river to fish; lots of fight in that steelie!

The Go Pro cameras are pretty sweet. About the best thing out there right now.

Here is some Trinity steelhead footage:

Particularly the HD version.

There are some cheaper options, but none that match the quality from the gopros. There are some more expensive options, but they're a bit out of reach for the typical user.

The go pro HD is the best thing on the market for personal wearable cameras. Its completely waterproof to 180ft, shockproof and almost indestructible. The headlamp/petzel mount works really well. Your head is the best anti-shake device out there. It is suprisingly stable when you look at the footage, and it's full 1080 dpi. I have one and have used it extensively, and for the purpose intended its really good.
The downside is that it is a fish eye lens with no focus. You will see the horizon lines 'bend' in most go pro footage. It is intended for filming in close also, if you want some footage of something 20 feet away and there is nothing in the foreground to focus on, the video will look like crap. I do not have the LCD display, which is now available, it this makes filming difficult at times. There has been a learning curve for me with some lost opportunities because I was still experimenting.
If it was me I would get the regular helmet go pro with the bike attachment also. The bike attachment allows you to attach the camera to your rod/boat/landing net etc. for some really cool perspectives. I would also get the display(which I think is an add on), an extra battery and the biggest, fastest SD card possible. I have a 32 Gig-4 speed which is the minimum recommended.(everything is available from Go Pro EXCEPT THE SD CARD)
Have a look at the website at the surf/skiing/skydiving stuff and you will be sold.

Hi,
I second the GoPro HD. I have it myself and it is really fun to use and akes greate footage. You can see some examples on the salmonjunkies.com website (site sponsor). At least the two later ones are shot with a GoPro HD.

Thanks for the responses; sounds like the gopro is a good bet. The fact that it's waterproof is good for someone like me who dumped my canoe twice last spring!

Hello,I have a GoPro HD Helmet Hero and it works very well, picture quality is very good and even with the Waterproof Case the Audio is ok, I also bought a adapter from Ram Products so it could be mounted on a tripod or on a suction cup for use on my boat.
Not wanting to divert this thread but to get the best from any recording you are going to have to Edit your Video, especially if its to be posted up on YouTube, what Editing Program's are people using? I have a Windows System and am using Pinnacle 14, lets just say the learning curve has been steep.

I was fishing last year when I met a gentleman who had eyeglasses which contained a camera. These were really interesting and quite functional. This fellow posts here occasionally. I just can't remember the name of them. I think they could record up to 3 hours. Really cool use of technology.

I'm watching this thread closely for your opinions as we will be taking one of these into the Dean in July. Haven't purchased one yet, but leaning towards the GoPro HD.

looks like an option worth researching as well. I have an older version of their headcam, and would not recommend it. But it looks like the version linked above has addressed most of the issues I've had with mine.

Hi,
for everyone thats interested in these cams, it may be an option to make quick search on youtube. There are always fotages from users (besides those cool looking vids from the companies...in best light, nothings shaking...;.)).
There you see how the vids will look in real life.
Cheers

Google, vimeo. They have a section filmed with GoPro, a lot of which are on fishing and they offer a free editing class as well. Also if you visit The Washington Fly Fishing site and read the Photography/Video section, there is more info on the GoPro, and a neat film clip of a guy catching a couple of fish on the swing.

I use a ContourHD POV camera. They are not waterproof, but you can buy a waterproof case for them. I have taken underwater video with it and it works really well. 16g Micro SD card stores something like 8hrs of HD video. Batteries last about 2 hours of continuous runtime. I carry 2 extra batteries with me for a days worth of fishing. I just keep it on at all times. It attaches right to the brim of my hat, they are super light. I highly recommend it. I will attach some vimeo videos taken with it later, after I remove some content from my vimeo account so locals don't discover all my secrets:chuckle:

The new Contour HD camera shoots in 1080, mine is 720.

Go Pros get some very cool shots, but hard to see any action past 20 feet..

heres a video with a bit of footage from the Bow with rising fish. Sometimes hard to see the eat, but has a very very cool angle.

ok, so here's the deal:

We need 15 - 20 cameras for purchase and I can arrange 15% off retail. The "catch" is that speypages would have to arrange for a single purchase and shipment of the total # of cameras (yes, if you wanted a couple that would work fine), and then send them to the purchasers ourselves. So some extra work on our part--re-packaging and re-shipping a bunch of cameras. I`m going to explore the logistics of the Canada-US shipping stuff, but at this point I think it is reasonable to say that, given the fact that some additional and rather time consuming work is involved, we will only be able to offer this to our subscribers.

This isn`t 100% yet--I`m still ironing out the details, so I wouldn`t want someone to subscribe and then find out that I couldn`t finalize things and think that I`d manipulated things, so I will keep you posted...(but if you don't support us you should just go ahead and do it anyways. It will make you feel very happy!)

Another option that was eluded to earlier is a digital recorder located in the frame of a set of sport glasses. It is sold as i-Kam Xtreme. I've used it both hunting and fishing. It is far from HD recording, but it certainly brings back the experience as it happened. You can google or whatever to find out more.
